A regretful experience I do not care to repeat

IM GETTING MY CHILD OUT OF THIS SCHOOL. This has to be the worse choice ever sending my child to this school. What I will say is that the teachers are phenomenal and the academics are superb. The problem is, Administration is horrible and the majority of students have extreme behavioral issues so this blocks any good that this school has. Please stay away from this school. Give it some years to get established.

Great Oaks Charter School has been incredible for my students growth. In August, my new 6th grader struggled significantly with organization, accepting responsibility and taking ownership of his own success. Great Oaks has instilled accountability with high expectations for EVERY kid from the uniform, to handing in homework, to being silent in their hallways. My son has never felt more safe and cared for, and I talk to his tutor DAILY. The leadership team members are also amazing and work overtime to respond to feedback from students and families. They did not use agendas in the beginning of the year, which was a hard adjustment for me as I worked to support my son with homework completion. I communicated my concerns to Miss Childs the principal, and they have since created a website for HW and bought each kid their own agenda. Teachers and tutors are warm, welcoming, and participate in all of the events at the school. To celebrate the top students, they are going on a skating field trip and allowed students to silly string staff members. No school is perfect, especially not in their first year, but I am so happy Great Oaks came to Wilmington and am confident that my son will continue to grow and learn here. Fantastic job GOWIL!

My son attends this school and absolutely loves it! I actually thought that the highly structured environment would be difficult for him however he has adjusted well and LOVES it! I have had vastly different experiences relative to the issue of receiving a response to any concerns I have had. I find the teachers, tutors, and administrators to be extremely responsive. Bullying was a concern as my child entered middle school and they assured me of it being a top priority that would be addressed and I have seen their follow through with this. I asked my son about his experience of having witnessed any racial discrimination against Caucasian students and he reported none and commented that in terms of race they support one another in his cohort. I strongly recommend that the parent with such concerns ensure that they go to the school and speak directly to a school official. In terms of the cultural make up of the teachers and administrators, it is quite balanced. There are three Caucasian teachers and three African American teachers and the administration has a similar composition inclusive of the Latino culture. In my opinion this is more in line with the trending population and shows forth the capabilities of all cultures to lead and teach all of our children. I will end with this, the school is not for everyone and the officials informed me of this during my consideration. So while I respect the opinions of others I think that it is important for parents and community members to be aware that Great Oaks cares deeply about the academic needs of children, they are preparing the students to be morally sound and have also sought to incorporate some fun activities which are all vital components to a comprehensive education. I do not believe that there was a better affordable choice for my child and I am grateful!

This school is the epiphany of, "teaching to a test." They even state that they are best known for their tutoring program, but that tutoring program is deceitful. The tutor time is spent learning the skills needed to pass the testing that guarantees the school its funding. They advertise as a college prep charter school, and they state that's the reason for the tutoring, but that is not accurate. My daughter attends this school, and cannot get help during tutor time with homework. They state that a large percentage of their students go onto college. The students have amazing grades. My daughter was a B student with a C in Math. She now has straight A's. Problem is, she isn't learning anything. She is taught with packets of information and allowed to use those packets on assignments, so she isn't retaining any information. When she doesn't understand something in class, she is told she is being disruptive.Over the past two months she has faced racial bullying. As 1 of 11 Caucasian students out of 250 she is constantly made fun of for being a "white girl." Also, most of the teachers are African American and when discussing issues of race they refer to themselves and the class as a whole. I.e., "We have to stand up for our rights as Blacks." When I brought this to the attention of the administration, my emails were ignored. My calls were sent to voicemails to leave messages that weren't returned. Lastly, there is a huge safety concern! My daughter's bus has dropped her off 20-30 minutes early on numerous occasions. I have often viewed the crossing guard out front standing in the building and calling out to the children when its ok to cross. Also, the children go to gym down the street to the YMCA. They are escorted by two teachers/tutors. They don't keep the group in an orderly fashion, and once, when my daughter stopped to tie her shoe, the group left her behind. She had to run about half a block to catch up. I am in the process of contacting the DOE, but I really wanted to get word out about this school in case it's being considered. Please search for other reviews on this school. Their Facebook review is from a parent that was trying to get a job there, and it was posted before school even started. All other reviews about other locations, are terrible. The staff does not care about the well being of our children.
