Hopkins School Ratings & Reviews

For the price we pay, not great. It is a cold place with fancy buildings and wealthy kids that really just ends up crushing a lot of students' self esteem. I had hoped for an environment that would foster my bright student's curiosity and encourage intellectual risk taking but all that matters in the culture of the school is grades.

I entered Hopkins in 7th grade. So far it has been an amazing. The kids are some of the nicest I have known. With the academics you will be challenged. The teachers really do love what they are teaching, and it does show. If you fail a course, you will have had to try because the teachers will badger you to get extra help (getting extra help is a common thing, it isn't bad).Update: There is bullying that teachers and other students don't really notice/care about.

The Hopkins campus is absolutely beautiful, more like a college campus than most high schools. The landscape is skillfully planned and well-maintained, with flowers blooming everywhere in the growing season and impeccable lawns. When walking between buildings, you enjoy a park-like atmosphere, and it is so pleasant to simply sit outdoors and enjoy the surroundings and the views from the hill. As a student at Hopkins I appreciated the landscape, and as an alumna I love visiting campus for various reasons, including showing it to visiting friends as a major New Haven attraction. As a gardener myself I think all of the plantings are incredibly lovely and well-placed.

i can not believe how hard my daughter works at hopkins. Her classmates are very bright and the kids are learning at such a high level and so much is expected of them that they dont seem like kids. there is no doubt that hopkins prepares kids to excel in college.

Hopkins' strength lies in its dedicated faculty and rigorous academic program. The accelerated track and AP courses offered are definitely at a college level, and all "regular" classes have high expectations. Homework levels can become unreasonable with four to six hours a night especially for upperclassmen in an advanced course of study, but the administration has made efforts to enforce harder limits on amounts of work (to varying levels of success). Plagiarism is taken very seriously-- about one student a year is normally expelled for honesty infractions Athletics are good not great. Serious athletes might look elsewhere, but teams in traditionally popular sports (soccer, swimming, tennis, etc.) are at a high varsity level, and some students can go on to play D1 college. Unlike peer schools (esp. boarding) Hopkins has no kind of recruitment process Hopkins is a lot of hard work, and like any school, you get out what you put in. Don't expect Hopkins to be your ticket to Yale, especially because matriculation numbers are affected by a high volume of faculty children Also, those who allege that Hopkins is "unsafe" or "near a bad area" are racist and probably from Greenwich.
