Does a very good job in developing students academically. Sports program is weakest aspect at school. Suggest students NOT participate in sports at school that they play at a higher level outside (i.e., travel teams) as they will quickly get frustrated and marginalized (focus is on giving upper class men spots on varsity teams and a disproportionate amount of playing time regardless of ability). Also very rigid around flexibility in missing games or practices (considered last period of school day). Best experience here would be having your child play a sport that they otherwise wouldn't do otherwise (allowing for the experience to be on "fun")Lastly 9th grade option is good for students who need extra time to mature and grow (i.e., red shirt year), with extra leadership opportunities provided.

My children started at New Canaan Country School when they were 3, in what Country school calls the Beginners program. After going through the admission process and talking with current families, I felt good about our choice to send the kids to NCCS. However, I assumed there had to be an underbelly—nothing is perfect. What we came to experience in the Early Childhood division (Beginners – Kindergarten) and at Country School at large was beyond what I could have even imagined for my children or our family. Every morning from the time they were 3 up through Kindergarten, my children were greeted warmly first by the Early Childhood division head and then by their teachers. They learned to make eye contact, shake hands and feel comfortable talking with these adults. They entered classrooms curated by their teachers with irresistible hands-on-experiences created with intention to teach them new information and skills. Their lessons were taught with much engagement and creativity. Nature and the natural world were important ways in to learning both in the classroom and outside on the beautiful 75-acre campus complete with trails, vernal ponds and gardens. Intentional and opportunistic teaching moments provided lessons on how to be a friend, how to apologize, how to be kind. Country School really practices what it preaches on educating the "whole child."My children love school and can’t wait to get there every day. They love learning. They love their teachers. They are thriving. We live in New Canaan where the public schools are excellent. It wasn’t a given we would keep the kids at Country School for elementary and beyond. It would absolutely have to be worth it. Country School has been more than worth it for our family. We feel incredibly lucky to have found our way to this school and to be part of such a warm community.

NCCS is at the forefront of educating the "whole child". Without undue pressure, especially at the younger ages, the school maintains very high academic standards which result in outstanding outcomes in secondary school and ultimately college placement and beyond, while also pushing ALL students to develop confidence in areas such as athletics, arts, public speaking, ethics, service and leadership/teamwork at many levels. In an era where being "well rounded" has fallen out of favor, NCCS students are setting themselves apart as students who can both excel in some areas and be confident in all. Kids at this school are just different - they are surrounded by outstanding role models in the faculty and staff, and fortunately, it rubs off. They learn how to conduct themselves around peers and adults in a way that will allow them to present their best selves and afford them the enhanced opportunities that come as a result. The culture of the school is irreplicable. While ninth grade seems like an awkward cutoff, families are encouraged (and supported) to pursue the next step whenever is right for them. For those who do remain, ninth grade is an incredible opportunity to lead the student body, and placement results are excellent among this segment. Half days on Wednesdays are also a key difference, but they are an awesome time for the school to re-invest in its faculty through supplemental training, while kids have the opportunity to explore extra-curricular options and have some semblance of a social life as they get older and juggle increasing school and after-school commitments. I can't recommend the school more enthusiastically to any family who values the traits described above. Visit the campus when students and faculty are there to best appreciate the culture and mission of the school.

My daughter has spent 3 years at NCCS and loves it. Always goes to school excited about the day. The faculty is highly qualified and the focus they place on individual student development is genuine.

We have been at NCCS for 3 years and have a 2nd grader and Beginner student. There truly is something magical that happens on a campus that strives to 1) let children be children 2) fosters a love a learning and 3) seeks to develop a child not only academically but also to develop their character. I've never been on a school campus where you consistently come into contact with students who are self-confident, respectful, engaging and happy to be there. NCCS does a wonderful job of not only educating children and preparing them for the future, but also teaches them the value of being a contributing part of a community.
