My son joined HKMS in 6th grade when we shifted towns. He was extremely anxious about joining a school where he knew practically no one. However 20 % of his fears were alleviated on orientation day, where the town's own incoming 6th and 7th graders helped new students to the school system familiarize themselves with the location of classes and use of lockers. The students were extremely warm and welcoming, and took the trouble to take my son multiple times to different class locations, so that by the end of orientation, he knew exactly where he should be going. He went alone with them and at the end of it all he himself told me that he thinks he "may" like it there after all. A year has passed and he is now going into seventh grade and absolutely loves it there. He is not an athletic boy but involves himself in other after-school clubs like Garden, chess, newspaper, math clubs. You get an email every week about your child's progress and grades on weekly assignments helping you identify which areas your child might be weak in. I coud go on and on about the merits of this school, but my son summed it up best when he told me" Mum, I'm glad we changed towns so I can go to this school."

I am an eighth grader this year at HKMS, and I think it's a great school. I agree with the other student - it's a great school! An absence of recess is not major; and we do not have a line in lunch. In our small community, every student is very involved and assisted if necessary. Projects are hands-on; lessons are thorough and cover every necessary topic; the teachers are very helpful and supportive; classmates do NOT bully others; and we ARE a Blue Ribbon School! I'm not trying to sugarcoat the benefits, but HKMS's academic program, as well as their "FPAs", or Fine and Practical Arts, all greatly help any student who attends greatly. I sure enjoyed my three years here and recommend it. STOP being so pessimistic, parents! It really isn't as bad as your children say it is!

I go here and I highly recommend this school! Classes are fun teachers are nice. But, a warning to new students, you have to reach out and make your own friends. We will not be nice to you. If you reach out we will love you no matter what! (its a weird system but it works)

I have two children at this school, both very different, and the school has served both well. I disagree about serving bright and above average kids. While SSES was not good at this, HKMS has done a great job for my extremely bright child and he has thrived there. The school expects a lot from the kids, but helps them with the organizational and other tools that they need. I have two complaints. The first is writing. They are too focused on how the kids score in the writing assessments, and in my opinion those assessments are not good measures of writing ability, nor does teaching kids to score highly on writing assessments teach them how to write. My second complaint is parent interaction. Parents are given access to PowerSchool so that they can track how kids are doing on assignments, but it is like pulling teeth to get thoughtful feedback from teachers to parents on their kids. There are no parent/teacher conferences and no process for alerting parents about academic or other issues that have come up, unless the parents take the initiative.
