Mary R. Tisko School Ratings & Reviews

The high rating on this site is why our family choose to move to this district of Branford from a less "privileged" town. Our (more specifically my child's) overall experience in this particular school was a nightmare. My child had ONE good teacher while attending this school for four years. (Branford public schools have Elementary from K-4th/ Middle School 5th-8th/ High School 9th-12th). The children's teacher's are assigned upon parent popularity and gift giving. These parents are allowed to "recommend" where their child is placed for the year(s) and also with which children they prefer. If you are unable to give gifts or are not considered a "popular" parent your child will be placed where ever and alienated. During my child's stay here, we found that he was having an extremely difficult time learning. I had to constantly contact the school, beg, and plead for additional support that was greatly needed but, overall ignored. Finally, when he received extra support, it was ill coordinated at best, with the main teacher and, there was no communication for maximized educational benefit of our child. Pulled from the regular classroom, worked at a lower level than the rest of the class in extra help, sent back to class after missing all instruction on new/current material while not there and, still expected to do the same work as the other children. When this did not work (How could it?!?) we asked for testing for learning problems and, were denied due to the fact that the school did not want to pay for it. We were told year after year he was meeting the standard level for whatever grade. Report cards and state testing proved otherwise. He was pushed through to the next grade each year regardless. The school (teachers & esp. the principal) made us feel like we were a nuisance and that our great concern over our son's education was ridiculous. He graduated this school not knowing how to: write a story properly, count money, etc.. (He was tested last year and does have a severe learning disorder!) If you're looking to get your child a good education-look elsewhere. If you have a lot of money and are looking to get back to into the popularity contest you lost in high school (& teach your child this is what's important in life not an education) this is the place for you.

great teachers, really good music program, teachers have great parent interaction & keep on top of students progress. the principal shows great interest in students, teachers & parents from day 1 right until the end of school- it's great to see such interaction throughout the year.

The school is what it is. Students are drawn from the more affluent sections of Branford, thus there are many stay at home parents that get involved. After hearing from other parents when I moved here, I expected something overwhelming with the school. I don't think my kids, and by extension their classmates are challenged enough. They seem to move slowly with subject matter, though I think that is done to ensure all the students progress through the material. I would prefer less standard worksheets and more free form blank pages from the teachers. It would allow a child to take things further if they have the aptitude and support from the educators. My children would advance further if they weren't restricted by that, but that is just public school. The first time I spoke to a neighbor about school the comment was "Tisko is like a private school". I don't see that. Although it is probably very decent in terms of a public school in New Haven county. But if I could afford it, I would send my kids to Foote (the "elite" families of New Haven county gravitate there) or Coldspring (believers in that free form education sheet I talked about above).
