Century Middle School Ratings & Reviews

I recently finished my three full years at Century Middle School, but the school will receive negative comments based upon my experience. Yes, the school does teach the students and I did see a huge improvement in my work from 6th grade to 8th grade. Most of the teachers I had were greatly effective upon my learning. Of course, there are a few in that bunch that happened to be real hard upon me. In 6th grade, I did slack off, but was still in the top half of classes. I did struggle a little. It helped me with knowing my rights and wrongs, yet that's when things started to get tougher. There would be nights where I stood up until 1, working, and wasn't able to spend a lot of time with my family. I remember coming home some nights and just passing out almost instantly due to being stressed out. All my teachers were nice to me (only because I stood on their good side). Coming into 8th grade--well--was horrible. Nights were spent the same, only less time with the family. I had one core teacher who treated the students so badly. One little mistake on an assignment would bring our grade down way too much. I started to feel like I was a stupid child and started to tell people that I was horrible at the subject. The 8th grade project only made it worse. I cried myself to sleep most nights, my parent would yell at me almost everyday telling me I was such a slacker, and I spent hours trying to research the perfect project that was unique, but I couldn't with such little time. For future students, think about the project before the school bring it up. It really is a lifesaver. Additionally, teachers never really pay attention to what is being said in class. During an educational movie, some teenage girl was informing us in the video. These two boys I sat behind just sat there sexuallizing her body and continued on to talk about their preferences. It made me uncomfortable. The teacher was just sitting at their computer or got up, getting a little closer to the students. Another time, a group of boys just started to sexuallize female students. Talking about each girl and whether they would "smash", kiss, or, date. I was mentioned.... One kid in 6th grade was even bullied three seats in front of the teacher! As an 8th grader, the whole grade was blamed for all the 6th and 7th graders mistakes. We were always yelled at daily! Just be careful when enrolled at this school.

Horrible! The staff does not care about their students. They do not have time for important matters. I also feel that their skills dealing with youth are poor. Opportunities to make great lessons are ruined because of their bullying I'm in charge attitude. They never had time for me as a parent either. I have to say the registrar Jeane is amazing that's why they got the one star is because of her.

This is my 8th, and final, year with students at Century. Overall, I think that Century does a good job of educating our students. The administration is welcoming to opinions and concerns and have always been receptive to my children and my husband and I. My children have thrived academically and the older two were well prepared for their high school experiences. All three of my children are academically gifted and the school provided them with the appropriate challenges and classes to help them grow through honors classes. The issues that we have had at Century are bullying. Our 8th grader has dealt with a lot of bullying issues throughout middle school. While early bullying issues were resolved, this year is a totally different. There has been a groups of children consistently saying degrading things to girls at the school, using sexual words to describe them and groping and sextexting happens on a very regular basis. The school needs do more to stop the bullying before they lose a student.

This is my daughter's 3rd year. I asked if she thinks there's a lot of bullying. She said there are rude kids, but she isn't aware of any real bullying. I feel very so-so / meh with this school. My daughter has had mostly good teachers. This year I'm concerned because her core Science teacher hardly has any graded work. e.g. In December - they only have ONE thing they'll get graded on! It's hard to end up with a good average grade if you only have one assignment. As a parent, I'm irritated by poor and last minute communication. e.g. Most communications that come out are missing information and I have to reply back with questions. Or they send out announcements for things happening that night...like everyone has a wide open schedule and can just show up to something they learned of that day.I hate the grading system (0-8). They can get 8s on assignments, but NOT on a final grade. And the grades don't average out. e.g. 5,5,4,5 doesn't necessarily mean the end grade will be a 5. And yeah, teachers complain about the online system - that "the system" didn't "take" the grade right, or it "lost" entered grades, etc. So there's either an application problem - or a user problem. The principal seems no nonsense to me. I appreciate getting same day communications when there are issues, e.g. safety issues, locker inspections. Once my daughter told me about a substitute that was creeping out the girls, being too touchy-touchy (hands, shoulders). He crossed the line with one of her friends (thigh, I think?). She reported him - and the school police immediately walked him out and the principal sent out a letter. I was proud of the girl who reported him - and glad the administration took swift action.I can't really gauge if the students are learning the right things that will prepare them for college and real life...So - while I can't rave about this school, my daughter's experience seems to be OK (and grateful it was definitely better than my Jr High!).

My son was a proficient/advanced student. I chose my house based on the rating of this school and other nearby schools. I was shocked by how low quality the teachers were at this school. I emailed all of his teachers at the beginning of the year to let them know I was there if my son struggled at all. I asked them to contact me if there was any issue. At one point, one of them emailed me because my son was talking too much in class. I was not contacted besides that. In January, I learned my son who had always been high performing failed all of his content classes. I was furious. In the second semester, one of the teachers emailed me, while my son was in her class, that she wasn't sure if he was "getting it" but was obviously on her computer instead of teaching. This is based on my experience when I am a school principal. I pulled my son from the school after one year. I was appalled.
