As a parent, I researched for the best possible Jr/Sr High School for my kids and I unequivocally found it in D'Evelyn. While their test scores are unbelievable (top ACT/SAT for 18 years running in CO), what is more impressive is their curriculum. They believe all students can succeed in their Liberal Arts curriculum and the staff gives the students what they need to do so (students must, of course, be willing to do the work). In today's educational world where our students are guinea pigs for every new fad, D'Evelyn has stayed true to its philosophy for 25 years. They teach the students knowledge and allow the students to come to their own conclusions, avoiding the normal political bias of today. The staff is carefully selected for those who truly believe in what they are doing at the school and they are required to have expertise in their subject (i.e. Chemistry teachers actually have Chemistry degrees). Because of these policies, they have the best staff I have seen and the students are reaping the benefits. Additionally, because all staff are committed to the philosophy of the school, all are rowing in the same direction, allowing the school to continue to improve in any way that is necessary. There is not a school in the area that I would have rather sent my kids to. Enrollment is based on computerized lottery (no testing) and the best chance to get in is in their first year of middle school (though they do enroll through 9th grad when spots become available). The Jr - Sr High platform also makes it so kids do not have to go through an additional transition during their hardest years. The Sr. High students act as mentors for the middle schoolers, which is also a large benefit. Hopefully, you will get the golden ticket like our family did!

Solid education but very little opportunity outside of core liberal arts. While the core liberal arts curriculum is strong - it lacks in creativity and evaluating issues from multiple angles. Best for those strong in math/science who like structure. Extremely limited in electives, little to no use of technology, and no engineering electives. Clubs all meet at the same time/same day - so very difficult to participate in multiple club activities. Extremely strong Christian right-wing influence.

Good academics, grade variation between teachers is all over the map. No current oversight on teacher’s grading policies. Homework is not coordinated well enough between teachers. Sometimes 8 hrs, sometimes 1hr. Very nice students overall. Great extra curricular activity. Not enough computer classes.

Fantastic school for kids who want to achieve more than the average students. Dont pay any attention to the student progress score of 3. With test scores and college readiness at 9' s and 10's where do you progress to?

Two different results for our family because kids learn differently. The first, not fond of the school - but was a kid that likes to work hard - and is now in a top tier University. Second, needed more freedom, disliked the school and EVERYTHING suffered - transferred and within two weeks did a 180 in all facets of life. My believe it is a one size fits all school, if your kid fits - great, if not a grinder for work - not much attention, help and no compassion. Do not hesitate to pull your kid when the GPA starts to matter. One last note, despite the opinion of the school that college admissions is aware of the THEIR caliber of student - in my opinion is drinking from your own kool aid. Spoke to admissions at top tier schools out of state - "GPA is KING, congrats on the great ACT score but why a GPA of only a 3.5 - we received 45,000 applicants and not familiar with your school." To be clear - great school for the right kid - my advice, competitive world, your kid can study like a rock star - that does not get them into the right college. Yes, they may need to learn those skills when they get in - but is that not what most of had to learn at that point as well.
