I don't want my child to go back.

Many times the parents are bullied just like the students are.

The Expeditionary Learning model sounds great on paper, and seems to attract a lot of families. However, there is not much creativity nor differentiation occurring because of this model. New teachers love it as it is like a script for them to follow. Experienced teachers leave and our children suffer with less experienced teachers in this DPS innovation school "experiment."

Ever since Laura (Principal) came to this school it has gone downhill. She doesn't care about anyone but herself. Instead of hiring great teachers she upgrades the building.

We were so thrilled to see this school change to an Expeditionary Learning School. It seemed to have enormous potential. The PTA and many families are incredible! The Spanish, Music, PE and Art teachers are first class and the librarian is simply amazing. The MIS teacher is one of the most remarkable educators I have ever encountered and the two lovely ladies in the front office are beyond delightful and helpful. Our child has gone to this school for two years. Last year was really good (excellent teacher). This year has been a nightmare. The principal Laura Munro refuses to set standards and expectations. The ship has no rudder and therefore spins in circles. There is no consistency in experiences. Some teachers embrace the EL model, while others refuse so you never know what kind of education your child will receive from year to year. There is an enormous teacher turnover rate and most of the incoming teachers have zero experience in EL, and sometimes teaching in general. With no direction from administration, they aren't given the proper tools to do a good job and wind up not doing a good job. There is little to no support in the form of Paras. The principal is reactive with no strategy. Responding to problems only after reaching extreme levels and she has a stack of angry parent letters on her desk. Heck, she isn't even on campus until an hour after school starts each day. She has no idea who is in her school or what is going on in the classrooms. There are tremendous disciplinary problems throughout the school. Some classrooms are regularly evacuated to protect students from other out of control students. While the Restorative Justice faculty member works very hard to do a good job, it is a very steep hill to climb. There is a science lab on campus, which should be a fantastic thing to have in any school, much less a public school. Unfortuantely the new science teacher does not teach science and instead shows videos. I hope he is replaced soon. The playground is nice and the school is going through some pleasant physical transformations, sadly those things are not enough for us (and many of our friends) to return to our neighborhood school. We will not be going there again next year. I have no faith in the principal or the direction the school is heading. Judging by its last report card DPS doesn't either. The problems are top down.
