This our fifth year at Mack. We could not be happier with the growth of our children, both academically and socially. Our oldest is in high school and is thriving. The teachers are caring, engaging, and dedicated. The admin. is supportive and accessible. The middle school this year is incredible with the addition of several program aspects plus the new middle school director. Thank you, Mackintosh Academy.

Extremely disappointing. Lack of experience and appropriate academic support despite classrooms of approximately 14 children with 2 full time teachers; lack of trained FTE to provide intervention; misrepresentation of actual progress to save face; kumbaya tactics; administration desperate for public affirmation in the Boulder community (but who literally ignored us upon our decision to withdraw); many instructional days sliced for teacher convenience (i.e, all day parent teacher conferences several days each semester) and entire days off for teacher "preparation" twice a month; frustrated teachers void of classroom management training, etc. etc.. Mackintosh holds up one or two employees with good credentials (whose children are also students) as representatives of the group. After leaving, we learned that our child was not one, but two grade levels below expectation, even though we had been told he was "on grade level" at Mack ---- of course, this was after their refusal to provide further intervention support. All this (plus a beautiful campus!) for the deeply discounted price of under ten thousand dollars. In a public school with twice the number of children per class, your child will receive a much improved educational learning experience. We are deeply saddened that it is our child who will suffer as a result of a learning year which was completely lost at Mackintosh Academy.

Mackintosh is amazing -- we are so happy we found it. It is a truly fantastic school for any child who needs to be challenged more than in a typical school. We moved to the BVSD area for the public schools, and while our daughter was doing great socially in our local school, she was bored and unhappy sitting through lessons on material she had already mastered. The differential learning plan that was offered by BVSD was not enough. Now she's thrilled to go to school everyday, and we are thrilled with the caring and stimulating environment she is in. We were initially hesitant to send our child to a "gifted" school, but have found the community to be grounded and unassuming -- a great community of families. Not only do we love what our daughter is learning (and how she is learning) but we love the homey environment, the amazing grounds with a creek, pond, orchard and fields... not to mention the new chicken coop, the fantastic art studio (complete with fantastic art teacher!), and the new design lab. The teachers are incredible with the kids, and we are very pleased with the leadership and administration, as well as the direction they are taking the school. We looked at the other independent schools in the area, but chose Mack due to its combination of a nurturing environment, with an innovative academic approach based on "best practices", and solid organization and vision. The kids are learning to be thinkers, individuals, collaborators, and caring members of society -- all while loving learning! Our daughter agrees, it was definitely the right move to come to Mackintosh. (p.s. Prior to starting at Mack we were a bit nervous about some of the negative reviews. While no school is a good fit for every child or every family, we, personally, have not found those reviews to match the reality at Mack. Check out the school, talk to the parents, and see what you think.)

Mackintosh Academy is a special place. If you are looking for a school that gets and cares about gifted and creative learners, is future-thinking, and never stops striving to improve, this is a great choice. The school is never going to be everything to all people, but our son has never been happier or more engaged, and that is very important to us as parents. At Mack, he can be himself and feel celebrated. His confidence, love of school and thirst for learning have blossomed beautifully. The teachers and administrators are incredibly caring; we feel immeasurably grateful for all they do. For parents looking for the right fit school for their child/ren, my encouragement is to a) reflect on your own educational experience and which aspects of it impacted your life in a positive way and b) consider what your personal definitions of success and achievement are for your child. Best of luck!

We're wrapping up our son's first year at Mack as a 4th grader. He was enrolled in BVSD, where he struggled to make friends, struggled with confidence, and really developed a dislike for school. This year he now comes home with a smile (most days), and is now engaged in school for the first time. There is no longer anxiety over standardized tests mandated by the state (there are no PARCC or CSAP tests in this school setting). Our previously "shy" son is now developing a new sense of confidence, greatly inspired by his teacher. I'm energized by the parent dedication and the visionaries in charge who are making positive changes at the school. They don't just talk about it, they're doing it! If you're unsure about the school based on other reviews, my advice would be to visit the school. I waited a year or so before scheduling a tour based on some questionable reviews I read here. I kick myself for not getting my son here sooner. As soon as we toured, we knew it was a great fit. It just felt right. You're a parent, and you know when to trust your gut. Our son just needed something different to challenge his "out of the box" thinking and learning style.
