Mound Elementary School Ratings & Reviews

Read the entire review please. Ignore the star rating above. We were forced to choose the number of stars, we randomly choose three. If you are a new parent of a potential kindergartner entering this school for the first time, this is for you. There are four teachers for kinder. As a new family entering the school you are more likely to get stuck with the teacher we are writing about--the families already at the school new to request other teachers. We wish we would have been told what to watch for, so we are paying that wish forward to you. For years now, one of the kindergarten teachers has been modeling poor behavior, calling kids ding dongs, lazy, one child even reported being called an idiot, another was told- you want to challenge me bring it on little boy, "even ___" is behaving well, and stomping feet and yelling were common(from the teacher). These statements have been reported by many many children for many years, including this past school year. It unfortunately appears to be a pattern of behavior. If you find your child in that classroom, please make sure to talk to your child about the tone and language used around them. Secondly, the children are sitting for almost the entire class period, first on the floor, then in chairs at the table, then outside for a short snack (or if the kids don't eat they can free play), then back to chairs again. Third issue: Creativity. Your child will be given a journal. This journal, you might think, is full of their drawings and writings. How it was created is concerning, we recommend asking your child questions like, "what if you choose to draw something different, what would happen? What if you choose to draw something additional, what would happen?" When our children were in this class, the teacher told the kids they must produce exactly the image the teacher does, step by step, anything else or anything additional results in being sent to sit on the rug. This undermines students developing confidence in learning to express their ideas, and be creative. Lastly, this teacher loves worksheets. If your child is above or below the one-sized fits some worksheet there may be more harm done then good. Talk to your kids, protect their developing curiosity, imagination, and life long love for learning. This is isolated to this one teacher.

As a working and volunteer parent I am very happy with this school, principal, teachers, and staff. I did my research before my child was of age to get into this school. Now, that my child is in we are excited because we can see how much my child has learned and how we look forward for home work Fridays. My only negative is not being able to volunteer more.

I totally agree with the parent stating that the school principal gives some of his preferred teachers A.K.A buddies a free pass. Especially, when things aren't going going well for the student. Start making noise parents.

Our child has had a wonderful experience at Mound School. They have a fantastic teaching and support staff that challenges the students to learn in different ways. The parents are very involved too, so teachers can have smaller groups to work with on projects and improve the students reading skills. The new science curriculum is very engaging and the field trips and classroom events throughout the year are fun, yet educational. Only negative is its not K-8. We don't want to leave! :)

My son is in Second Grade here, and really enjoys it. The facility is clean and has alot of landscape upgrades this year in the play area and has a working garden in three locations. The Science labs will have iPads for the students and a technology lab even. Teachers are always alert and welcoming when we drop off in the morning. Mound requires each student to get here without busses, there are three entrances into the school to pick from and plenty of safe options for parking and pick ups. Class schedules are posted online for parents to follow along with their teachers inputs thru web sites. Overall it's a superb school. Lots of parental involvement is a blessing. Tons of diversity in the families that choose to send their kids here, since it's a lottery system to get in.
