Management: This is the biggest issue. Brookside's leading administrators are micromanaging, passive-aggressive, and, at times, tyrannical. Veiled threats and intimidation are the leading tools utilized to obtain the desired results. Teachers routinely receive vague, blanket emails addressing issues, and teachers are left to play a “guess who” game as they try to determine exactly for whom the note is intended. The same thing happens at staff meetings where issues are brought up publicly, and once again no one knows for sure whom is being addressed. Moreover, teachers are horribly micromanaged. Recently, two teachers were actually reprimanded for rearranging the student desks in their classrooms! While I understand that standardization can help create a comfortable atmosphere for students, at Brookside, standardization is taken too far; it’s like a set up for a science fiction film. Management wants only “cookie-cutter” teachers and students, while creativity and independent thought are routinely stifled. Management also treats its employees horribly. This last year, four teachers were left to discover on their own that the school was actively seeking their replacements by advertising for their jobs. When these teachers confronted the administration about this issue, all four were told that the job openings listed online were for additional positions to be added to next years’ schedule. This explanation, however, was completely false, as not one of these “additional” positions ever materialized. In the end, all four of these teachers were forced out and replaced. This passive-aggressive strategy – if you can even call it a strategy – is something that I, as a long time employee of Brookside, have seen used time and time again. Indeed, I can recall least 15 teachers who have been replaced in this manner – all of whom had been left to assume that they would be returning the next school year. It is pretty horrible when you have to learn from a student that the school is advertising for your job; nevertheless, this kind of thing occurs routinely here at Brookside. Although I am still employed here as of the date of this review, I hope it will not be for very much longer.

I would not recommend this school for the following reasons:First of all the school as a whole: The school is only concerned with sports and reputation. If a student is a good athlete and brings the school positive attention, then he will have an easy time at everything -- discipline, grades, etc. The school wants only positive attention, and this is largely achieved by creating an atmosphere where everyone gets an A. While that is not true of 100% of the teachers, there are enough that do to put over 2/3 of the student population on the honor roll -- even students who are failing one or two classes. The school also brags that EVERY STUDENT GRADUATES FROM BROOKSIDE. That is due to two things: easy classes and teachers who give out A's like candy! Moreover, the school only does standardized testing every other year. The curriculum is grossly out of date, and teachers have almost no support material. If they want it, the good ones buy it themselves. Class size is large; sometimes the ratio is even 32:1. This is ridiculous considering how much we pay! Finally, the academic counselor really doesn't know what he is doing and is not up to date on deadlines and only monitors athletes properly. As for the teachers, one teacher is apparently known for leaving out tests where students can photograph them and distribute answers to other students. This same teacher spends 2/3 of the finals schedule doing last minute review and requires only 30 minutes for the actual exam. Another teacher apparently does not check homework and will give credit for the same assignment over and over. While my kids once attended here, I would NEVER send them here again!
