NDV is an incredible school. My children are thriving, the teachers are dedicated, the parents are very involved, and the leadership is open and understanding.

The youngest of our 3 children just graduated from NDV (they all attended K-8) and our family is extremely grateful for the education (academic, spiritual, personal) they received at NDV as well as the relationships we formed there. The teachers and staff are committed, caring, and enthusiastic. The community is warm, engaged, fun, and thoughtful. NDV is academic, diverse, and nurturing, and emphasizes character and compassion. Our children felt well-prepared in high school for a rigorous curriculum. The middle school math program, which was one of NDV's weaker spots due in part to teacher turnover several years ago, is greatly improved, and most of the NDV students in our youngest child's class tested into the more advanced math course at his high school. The parents' association is active and puts on a number of events that are fun, build community, and help fund the many field trips, in-house academic experiences, and other supplemental activities NDV offers. A few comments about the review below – I realize that experiences are different, but we typically experienced just a few donation solicitations per year (from class parents, not the school, e.g., for teacher holiday and year-end gifts), and participation was always optional/voluntary; and I don't believe teacher turnover is significant compared to other SF schools, in fact there are many teachers who have been there for many years, I am always impressed by their continued enthusiasm and dedication to the students.

Two of my kids go to NDV and while we’ve had a fair experience overall, I think the school has room for improvement. NDV is dealing with declining enrollment and there has been high turnover in the staff in the past few years. Language arts is strong, but math and science are very weak and the school consistently scores low in these areas. Initially, we liked the spiritual aspect of the school, but there was a change over the past two years with a new principal and priest. Now the school does not feel very inclusive for non-Catholics. So, if you aren’t Catholic this school may not be a good fit. If you’re a working parent, it's a struggle to keep up with the constant asks for time and money. We’re asked more than a dozen times each year to donate to a variety of school needs and it’s overwhelming. There’s a big annual gala event which is financially out of reach for families with more moderate incomes. The location is great if you work downtown, but it’s also a bit of a headache. You need to pay for parking for most school events. The pick-up and drop-offs on Pine Street are stressful - lots of yelling back and forth to get the kids into the cars. Also, there are some bad elements in the neighborhood with homeless people sleeping in front of the church. Last year there was a bomb threat and the school was shut it down for several days. Some of the kids were traumatized by this experience.

My kids both attended NDV since kindergarten and came out very prepared for the challenges of high school. NDV taught them great organizational and study habits, as well as how to manage their time. These important skills were taught to them at a young age and will continue to benefit them.

Our children are thriving at NDV. They love the school and so do we!
