Horrible it has been transformed to a mini prison for kids

I worked as a staff member at PS7 Elementary in the 2014 - 2015 year. The teachers were fantastic and always put forth their best effort. I enjoyed all of them personally and professionally. They will go above and beyond for every child. However, I would caution those who are looking to enroll or become a staff member. This school isn't for every child or teacher. For those who struggle academically (either due to lack of exposure or due to a learning difficulty) there are programs in place that can support your child. If your child is average or gifted, there isn't much available to support your child. It is not at the fault of anyone in particular - the school and system just isn't designed to serve students in this demographic. The school put in a lot of effort in supporting children with behaviorally difficulties. Though all children deserve a good education, I do not believe the punitive system used supports the child who struggles and the other children who are ready to learn. The school struggles with resources, and from my experience, the teacher training and disciplinary system needs a lot of work. I hear they have a new administration, and I hope that was able to make the needed change. Do your research before choosing PS7 as either a teacher or for your child. There are not many people I would recommend it to.

If your child is struggling academically and with behavior concerns, this MIGHT be a good program for you. If your child is advanced or gifted, there is not much available for him/her. There is a one-size-fits-all approach that targets lower achieving students at the expense of those on target or beyond. The discipline system is very controlling and punitive and doesn't allow students to make small mistakes to promote learning; every mistake is treated with severe consequences. Children are allowed to make few decisions for themselves which leaves all the management in the hands of adults. Children cannot learn unless they have opportunities to make decisions for themselves; especially older students. The school lacks resources for staff and students. There is little outside of the four core content subjects and the state minimum requirements for PE. Children have few opportunities to express themselves artistically or musically. If these things are important to your family, this is not the school for you. The new 2015 assessment data show it to be no better academically than the Sacramento City Unified School District as a whole, and much worse than San Juan, Elk Grove or Natomas and the state as a whole. While this years' data is meant to be baseline data, one would expect the school to score at least at a par with neighboring school districts, or if one is to believe their advertising, better than area schools. This is simply not so. Children in this program are taught to be very successful rote learners and multiple choice standardized test-takers. The new standards, which require global thinking and problem-solving skills are challenging to this teaching philosophy. I urge parents to observe classes, ask questions and really think about whether this is a good fit for your child and the goals you have for him/her.

My perceptive will be different, because my child is different. I believe if your child is taught at home how to be respectful, how to sit and read quietly, taught right from wrong, then you wont need the staff to do that for you! The schools will be great for you. Now, I do understand that children have special needs (I have one too)and they are hard to handle and disruptive to not only the class but the school. For them the school has aids that sit with them through most of the day. The rest of the children need parents to step up and make it right, the teachers are not their parents, most socialization skill start at home. My child loves the teachers because she is taught step by step to they all the children get the new skill. Mrs. Hill, Ms. Hurbin, Mr. Hayes and Ms. Brown were wonderful ! I'm sure the principal has had her share of angry parents, she has always been very accommodating to speaking with me and my child.Again, circumstances are always different.
