Sacramento Country Day School Ratings & Reviews

**If you are reading this, please view the previous review (this is a continuation) ...Onto the next thing: This school is so incredibly small that one cannot possibly have a full middle or high school experience. My sister and I did track and cross country together at Country Day from 4th grade until we left. Each year, the same 5 people would come out for the team. At the meets, 3 people. Until all who were left were my sister and I. Wow. Pretty sad, for a middle school (combined with high school) track or cross country team, don't you think? I am currently part of a Track team at my new school with OVER 100 people. That is, after tryouts. I feel supported (by over 100 people) and this team means a lot to me and it means a lot to the coach and every person on the team. This sport (along with all sports at my school) is taken very seriously. I could honestly go on and on, but sadly there is a 2,500 character limit so... that's all folks

Our children have each been at Country Day since pre-K. Each year, we discuss whether we feel the tuition is still "worth it," and every year, we decide that we do.First, the curriculum is unparalleled in the Sacramento area, and the happiness of the children, not to mention the high school test scores, reflect that. (Country Day's SAT scores are far better than those of any other school in the area.) SCDS does not teach to the test (standardized testing is not done); rather, it purposely fosters a love of learning from the youngest grades. Country Day is a *whole-child* college preparatory education. The teachers craft a curriculum that creates a joyful and comprehensive learning experience. I love how my daughter's third grade class reads level-appropriate works of literature together as a class, and ties those works into themes with history, social science, and field trips. (On back to school night, the exciting curriculum made my husband and I long to be in her class!) I love that they have regular music, art, and foreign language classes (and PE on a daily basis) and the resources to make all of those "enrichment" classes great. And,the enrichment classes tie in beautifully with the other academic subjects. I love that my children have 10-13 children in each of their classes. I love that homework seems to have a purpose, and is not endless busy work and worksheets. (The homework takes my children a reasonable amount of time each night--and they are both in several sports/activities.) I love that the lower school librarian, Ms. Ryan, knows every child, and often even knows what books that child likes, wants to read, or should be reading. The unique passion of our music teacher, Ms. Bennett, also regularly makes me thankful for Country Day. Those are the types of differences in education for which we chose Country Day.Socially, our children are very happy. I have not seen bullying; the classes are so small that that kind of behavior would go nowhere fast. And the school has implemented a social/emotional wellness program that I love. (My little one has started to calmly reflect and "use [his] breathing tools" when upset!)As far as minuses, the school *needs* a cafeteria/multipurpose room (and a corresponding school based hot lunch program) and, in my opinion, a bit more security. Comparable schools have both of these.

I am a student at country day. It has great academics and engaging teachers, but a constant issue with bullying, I am slightly different then every one else and have different interests, but am constantly being bullied and picked on, and it's forcing me to be someone I'm not. I think the academics are ok I just wish the spent a little more time on the bullying

Spend one evening getting to know the teachers at a parent's day event and you will be sold. Each teacher is unique in their own special way but they all have an infectious enthusiasm for their subject that is so engaging. As we leave, I always tell my wife, if our son doesn't want to go to Country Day, I'll gladly take his place. I am proud to be a Country Day parent.
