John Gill Elementary School Ratings & Reviews

Love the direction the school is going, especially the mandarin immersion program.

The low rating given to John Gill is an incomplete representation of the school. I am glad that we went deeper and gave the John Gill’s Mandarin Immersion program a try. With respect to our kindergarten experience this year (2017-18), it feels like we won the lottery. Having three children (8th, 5th, and K), we have had experience with both public and private schools. Based on our experience at our local “award-winning” public elementary school, we knew that our youngest would likely be bored with the kindergarten program at our local elementary school. Since the MI program is available to out-of-district families, it seemed like a good alternative for us. Our kindergartener could learn two languages in a much shorter instructional day, freeing him up to pursue his other interests without having to spend time learning Chinese after school. From the outset, it was a win win for us. With two third of the school year behind us, we could not be happier with the results to date. My son’s kindergarten teacher is as experienced as they come. Having raised four children of her own, she understands how to challenge and motivate young students. She helps them understand math concepts instead of focusing on the arithmetic alone. She is not focused on teaching to the test but on truly helping the children internalize the concepts. She is truly educating her students and not just preparing them to succeed on the standardized test. She has really demonstrated her depth and experience. Having a good education is not just about the brain but the whole child. As has been the case for generations, the future leaders in our rapidly-changing world need empathy, which is difficult to teach but must be learned through personal experience. John Gill provides a richly diverse environment for young learners to walk a mile in someone else’s shoes and learn to embrace and celebrate each other’s differences. The icing on the cake is the awesome MI parent community. Everyone volunteers to help make this program a success. We are grateful to be part of this awesome program and community.

Our four children have all attended John Gill and had a great experience. Currently we have two children with zero Mandarin background thriving in the Mandarin immersion program. The teachers are excellent, the program challenging and fun, and the community of parents positive and supportive. Our second grader can comfortably carry on a conversation with native speakers, and they say her accent is excellent. The unfortunate 2 rating that John Gill gets from Great Schools is not an accurate representation of what is happening at the school. This rating does not reflect the solid leadership, the academic progress underway, and the excellent quality of the Mandarin immersion program, which is attracting family from other districts and putting John Gill on the map.

Our daughter is in K at the Mandarin Immersion program within John Gill, but we love that she's made friends with other children at the school too. They are regularly eating and playing together during school time and the school, together with the PTA, organize a lot of fun and educational activities for all grades throughout the year. We feel like we're a part of the school, not just part of the MI program. The MI program itself is wonderful - challenging but fun. Our daughter had no experience with Mandarin or other languages before joining the program. She's learning quickly and we've been told by Chinese-speaking friends that her pronunciation is excellent. She's genuinely excited to go to school each day. The teachers are imparting knowledge, but are definitely also teaching the social skills these kids need to work together in groups in order to thrive. There's also regular fun treats for helping tidy up, acting with respect, etc.Principal Rivera is great - very present and active, knows parents by name and can be seen at all events, in the yard before school, etc. Every teacher I've met is passionate and committed and often seen at school after dismissal. The homework that comes in seems like a reasonable amount, but this is our first kid, so I'm not really sure what other schools/grades are getting.

We have been so pleased with our experience with the MI program at John Gill. Our daughter has almost finished her second year and is in the pioneering class. She can read, write, and speak very fluently now. It's been especially amazing seeing her give presentations on the Amazon rain forest and water in Chinese. Her teacher this year is so committed to making sure every child is fulfilling his or her potential. She incorporates challenging homework so advanced kids are not bored but also pays attention to those that are struggling. She's especially good at commanding the attention of the entire class, not an easy feat for a bunch of second graders that are very chatty and love to socialize with each other. She has very high expectations of her students, and it shows in how much our daughter has learned this year. As for some who have voiced concerns about bullying, I have not experienced these problems firsthand. All I have observed is that the kids in my daughter's class seem for the most part to treat each other with kindness and respect. Most of the families are close and socialize outside of school so often it's possible to catch negative behaviors and correct them through parent intervention. But overall, the kids seem to get along quite well and work out their differences.
