This is a school run by nice folks. But after two decades it continues to struggle with an extremely uneven teaching staff, money shortages, chronic faculty upheaval and lacks clear, dynamic vision from its leadership. It is a fun parent club, a self-selected student body and has lofty aims but lands, ultimately, as a mediocre private school. But you could certainly do worse.

Excellent Experience! Even though our children had the grades & test scores, & would have been doing "fine/been successful" in a "prestigious" school, they attended Waverly. It has been a very good decision. Having seen the movie "Race to Nowhere" several years ago, we wanted a school that allowed our children to blossom into the best people they could be, discover their strengths (and weaknesses), learn what they were passionate about, without demolishing their love for learning or developing stress overload. So far so good. Our children have grown up in progressive schools since first grade. And we are happy that we made the decision to continue that path for MS and HS. It was a leap of faith backed up by research, and our children are thriving academically, socially, and discovering their passions. And as far as we can tell, this school benefited our children who are different types of learners because teachers are well-informed Teachers have developmentally appropriate expectations. This does not mean it is not a challenging school. (Like one reviewer described, many of the HS classes are mini college-type classes in the amount of higher order thinking required!) There is an expectation that students healthfully strive to do their best, be organized, & learn from mistakes or set-backs. Our children are college-bound and have/are developing the necessary skills to be successful in college (I have experience teaching bright college students.) Sending a child to a progressive school, then to college avoids premature burnout -a little known secret that some parents are discovering as they do the research on college success. If you are transferring into a progressive school midway (MS or HS), read the research and have an open-mind to support yourself on this journey; or else you'll get cold feet. Parents who have been on the progressive education path since kindergarten have an easier experience continuing with MS and HS; Others may have a difficult time adjusting. The school attracts families with different educational goals who define education in a more holistic manner challenging the competitive lens. So, I recommend families review their value systems, and make sure the choice to attend reflects who you are as a family. The journey will be much easier if you are a good match.

Our child is a high school student at The Waverly School. The experience in this community has been extraordinary. The classes are incredibly challenging and intellectually stimulating. The subject matter and execution are more like college seminars that high school classes. We are particularly happy that the learning is done in a collaborative environment rather than the traditional competitive framework. We expect that he will be very well prepared for the next step in higher education. It is a small and warm community. The students are engaging, thoughtful and bright. It is the best environment for college preparation that I can imagine. All of the substance with much less of the stress and pressure that can be found when class rankings and test results are the ultimate measures of outcomes. He participates in interscholastic sports, the arts, collaborates with classmates and is encouraged to reach, explore and be willing to take risks, fail, and try again. Unless a student wants big time sports and the traditional (stereotypical) high school social experience, I cannot imagine a better environment for learning, community engagement and intellectual growth. Recommended without reservation.

Waverly is an amazing school. The teachers care about the students, the children are nice, and the parents are down to earth. I came to Waverly in fall of 2013 and I did not look back. I am going to be in 7th grade at The Waverly School and I couldn't be happier. The homework load is low because you learn so much in the school day there is only about thirty minutes to an hour and a half of homework. I love this school. I already made up my mind and I am going to graduate from Waverly! This school is so dope!

We came to Waverly from a highly regarded public middle school. My child was crushed with hours of work in the 6th grade and although doing well academically, was bored and unhappy. Waverly has been such an incredible change. The workload is reasonable and the teachers have been miracle workers in that my child is excited about learning and actually talks to me happily about school. The teachers are relatively young and relate well to adolescents, but at the same time, most of them are very experienced. The curriculum focuses on project-based, experiential learning and I have been so impressed with much of the work my child has produced and the type of assignments the teachers give. They really focus on analytical skills and teaching the students to use evidence to support their arguments. Additionally the teachers truly care about the students and address social conflict lovingly and discreetly when it comes up as it often does at this age. We couldn't be happier with our decision to move to Waverly.
