In initially selecting St. Theresa, we liked that they focus on developing the mind, body, and spirit for children.  As a Catholic I like the principles and religious education, as a parent I like the overall education and athletics... and when adding it all up I like the character they are helping develop with my children. The additional programs, depth of teaching resources, and quality of the overall education make St. Theresa one of the best schools in the Bay Area, and the best school in Oakland.

I'm equally pleased with the school, the education my children receive there, and the school community.

We have been incredibly pleased with our experience at St. Theresa. The school is a true 'hidden gem' in the East Bay. The school provides 1) an excellent academic experience (highest test scores in the Diocese with scores similar to many of the more expensive independent schools), 2) individualized learning (our 1st grader is advanced in math and gets pulled out of class to work 1 on 1 with the middle school math teacher), 3) a supportive and tight knit community (our class parents are all friends and have build strong relationships), 4) a diverse environment (while the school was less diverse years ago, the younger classes are very diverse), 5) strong moral characters and values to its students, 6) top notch after school care that is guaranteed and 7) a diverse array of high quality extracurriculars (all students do art, music, PE, and spanish with the art program run by a member of the Museum of Children's Art in Oakland and the music program run by a Grammy award winning musician). When we compared our public option, other independent private schools and other Catholic schools in the area there was no comparison. Compared to the public schools St. Theresa provided a significantly more robust experience (better academics, after school care and extracurriculars). When compared to other Catholic schools, St. Theresa stood out due to its campus/facilities, better academic results and community. Lastly, when compared to independent private schools, St. Theresa provided a very similar experience with comparable academic scores, stronger values at a third of the price. Choosing St. Theresa was a no brainer.

Our experience at this school has been very poor. I can understand why parents may choose St Theresa- it is a non-public school with a tuition much lower than private schools. If St Theresa is your only option, then go for it and cross your fingers. There is a chance it may work out but there is an equal chance that it will be an utter disaster. This is not a school that supports all types of students. If you have options, go elsewhere. If you decide to give it a shot plan on lining up an exit strategy just in case. And be prepared to do a lot of work to support your student.
