Napa High School Ratings & Reviews

I'm set to graduate in June of this year. My overall experience with the school hasn't been great.AP teachers and courses are challenging & rewarding, but college preparatory courses are absolutely horrifying. I decided to take a college prep English class this year (never having taken prep before) and I have an avg of 3-4 weeks to write a 500 word essay. The difference in workload & rigor b/w college prep courses & AP/Honor courses is VERY extreme. If a student has taken college prep courses their entire high school career, they will have a VERY hard time adjusting to AP classes. Comparison:College prep classes: Group projects that take 3-4 weeks to complete. Lessons taught by powerpoints and videos not made by the teachers themselves.AP Classes: Tests every other week, 40-60 question study guides to be completed over the weekend/in 4 or so days, etc.You get the point.AP classes are challenging, and they should be. I have nothing to critique about the AP classes and teachers I've had these past few years; I've passed each AP test I've taken with 4's and only one 3.But prep classes are horrible. They are EXTREMELY easy. They do not prepare ANYONE for college whatsoever or frankly for anything. (I'm mainly talking about English and history. I can't judge prep math bc I've never taken one.) But there is an obvious distinction b/w students who take AP classes and prep classes and unfortunately that distinction is usually demonstrated by their motivation to succeed and/or participate in school. & Why should they try if the only quizzes they take are open book which they can ditch class for and make up the next day already knowing the questions?Go to NHS if you want an easy pass and/or for sports. Go to NHS if you're looking for an AP education (but VHS also has this). Don't go if you're actually trying to LEARN something valuable. Education is not important in prep classes. Just do your homework, late or not. Just ace open book quizzes and don't do your homework. Whatever, just pass. Not to mention the faults of the Senior Project (that's NVUSD's fault though) or their serious lack of choices in electives (APPLAUSE FOR VHS)!At least they'll implement an AP computer science course. Sad that no one in my class got to experience that.Other than that, I do have to say that students at NHS are very likable but NHS can't take credit for that.

I had fun going to Napa High. I learned a lot, and could have graduated early, but I chose to graduate with my class. I wish I could go back in time and go to Napa High again.
