This is a gem of a school - outstanding teachers, small class sizes, a warm and nurturing environment and the right balance between rigorous academics and art, drama and music. Like many other families, we've watched our daughter thrive here. The Harkness Method, used in the middle school, is a well-respected and highly effective program. I can't say enough about the smart, creative and capable teachers. They work well as a team with Ms. Flowers, and kids go on to top rated public and private high schools. We looked a long time before finding this school and we're very glad we did. Another plus - a great community of families. My child is happy and excited about learning.

Hope this review helps! My daughter is a (G7) RMDS student. Founded in the 1970s and without peers, RMDS is the only Bay Area Middle School offering the renowned and highly effective Harkness discussion model. In fact, 100% of the RMDS middle school teachers have been Harkness-trained. Based on the Socratic Method, the Harkness Method was pioneered in the U.S. by Philanthropist Stephen Harkness who gifted in the 1930s the equivalent of $50 million to Philips Exeter Academy. Since its early inception at Exeter, Harkness is not a pedagogy, it's a way of life. It begins in the classroom and extends beyond it, to field, stage and common room. It’s about collaboration and respect, where every voice carries equal weight, even when you don’t agree. The Harkness Method has now been adopted in numerous schools and colleges (including Harvard Law School), where small class-sizes makes it most effective. The outcome is that RMDS students are highly sought after by competitive high schools in the Bay Area for the skills they have gained through their middle school preparation. Harkness described its use as follows: “What I have in mind is [a classroom] where [students] could sit around a table with a teacher who would talk with them and instruct them by a sort of tutorial or conference method, where [each student] would feel encouraged to speak up. This would be a real revolution in methods.” At Ring Mountain Day School, students are seen, heard and known. The focus is on putting students—rather than teachers—at the center of their own learning, on developing their inquiry and communication skills through discussion-based and project based, hands-on learning. Harkness trains students to become confident critical thinkers who are prepared for high school. The proof is that 92% of RMDS eighth graders are offered enrollment at their first or second choice high schools. Some quick facts about RMDS: •Small classes (12-15 students) foster authentic and warm relationships with teachers •Nearly 40% of RMDS families add to the school’s ethnic diversity •30% of our students live in San Francisco and use RMDS bus to and from school •RMDS graduates are currently enrolled in the following independent high schools: Marin Academy, the Bay School, Drew, Urban, Stuart Hall, Convent of the Sacred Heart, Marin Catholic, Lick-Wilmerding, and San Francisco University High School.

We couldn't be happier to have found a school dedicated to nurturing well-rounded, independent thinkers with a strong community ethic, while at the same time capable of attending to a variety of unconventional learning needs.

Ring Mountain is a special place. The teachers are outstanding and truly see each child in their uniqueness. The head of school Sarah Flowers is authentic, wise, and a solid leader. Parents are engaged and the community is warm and welcoming. We feel very lucky to be a part of such a progressive learning environment.
