We truly enjoy being a part of this community. The ability to learn standardized tests and accomplish home work has no bearing on the level of intelligence an elementary student has. I understand the research, its been proven that teaching to tests doesn't help our children become strong thinkers and can stifle a teaching environment. This community does it's best at providing a balanced place where you can have both-- social emotional + academic rigor. I believe people will look to this school in the future as actually 'being ahead of the curve' due to it's progressive approach and we're thrilled to be a part of it.

Look past the low academic rating!!! Walgrove was not our district school, but after touring what was supposed to be our school we were in a bit of a panic. That school was rated 8/10 and as a language immersion school it was highly sought out. But it seemed very rigid, and art/music/theater/PE etc. all seemed relegated to after school programs. Our daughter might have been well educated, but she needed more than academics . Then we found Walgrove. Walgrove has a huge campus where the kids can roam the Wildlands and the garden, and the arts are integral to daily instruction. More importantly, the teachers work towards developing the whole child. We are currently only in kindergarten, but my daughter was painfully shy her whole life, and now she had friends in every grade, speaks comfortably to other kids and adults, and shows confidence in her ideas and abilities. These skills will serve her far better than the number of sight words she has memorized! And as far as that goes, she chose when she wanted to start really learning to read and progressed from 2 words to grade proficiency in a matter of weeks, all self-directed with excellent support from her teacher. Most days we cannot drag her away from school even at 6:30 at night when they are locking the gates!

My child has been at Walgrove for most of elementary, having left a private school, and we have been very happy with our experience. Each year, she has had a caring, approachable teacher that she has felt connected with, and this school offers “extras” that, I believe, sets it apart from many others. For example, my child has thrived in the free after-school musical theater program. (I know many have been happy with the after-school violin program, too, though we don’t have any experience with this.) During school hours, some of the highlights are the beautiful studio art lab, organic gardens, a native-plants Wildlands area, Council club, and elective enrichment classes; also, the campus is large, ensuring that kids have lots of room to roam, play, and exercise. My child does well academically, and she has continued to progress in her time here, especially through some of the hands-on group projects regularly implemented in the curriculum. The Friends of Walgrove booster club is full of incredibly committed and energetic parents who do so much for the school. I am concerned that this low rating here will prevent people from even having a look at all the offerings at this gem of a school. When we toured, we really sensed the positivity and enthusiasm in this community, and, in retrospect, I am so glad that I paid attention to this observation instead of relying on a number generated by a website. On that note, I was just looking at a public high school outside of LA that was rated a “10,” and the parent reviews were really negative. Have a look on this page and see all of the glowing reviews from the Walgrove community; this school is so much more than a number. Please visit and see for yourself!
