Oakwood Secondary Ratings & Reviews

Oakwood as an exceptional school. Our daughter is in her junior year and she's absolutely flourished here. She came from a middle school that wasn't academically rigorous so we had some concerns. She needed to do some catching up - and her teachers all worked together to get her where she needed to be. She's now taking honors Physics, AP US history, etc. It was a team effort and Oakwood did right by our kids.

As the parent of an Oakwood alum, I can say that my child’s experience at Oakwood was extremely positive. We are a family of color. Oakwood appealed to us because of its deliberate and intentional commitment to diversity. During our time at Oakwood we saw the community become more ethnically and racially diverse with each passing year. We also appreciated the increase in single parent and same-gendered families. I know that the school currently has 34% students of color. Also, since doing diversity “right” is not only about the numbers, Oakwood has several support mechanisms in place to promote and foster equity and inclusion. Students often engage in discussions regarding issues of difference in their weekly Advisory sessions. There are active affinity groups for students. The school hosts multicultural family gatherings for families to connect with one another and build community. There is a highly engaged Parent Org Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee, as well as a Board of Trustees Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee. There is a full time Director of Diversity Programs on staff that partners with these committees, as well as with teachers and students. Oakwood provided my child, (now a self-sufficient young adult with a Master’s degree, who is…I am delighted to say…gainfully and happily employed in the field of their choice), the academic foundation as well as the emotional support and social skills to successfully navigate this increasingly complex and complicated world.

I am a current student here. Oakwood assign pointless homework and tests on completely irrelevant subjects. Rather than collect the homework each day, students must keep a semester's worth of homework stacked in their folders. If you don't turn in the homework all together, you don't receive credit (despite the teacher correcting your homework each day.) The campus is not what you would call nice, and students must cross a busy street multiple times a day. This negligence has resulted in students being hit by cars (thankfully, they are all ok.) But what if? It would all be the fault of the school. The tuition is upwards of 30k, multiply that by 500 kids and you get upwards of $15 million! Yet they throw huge fundraisers multiple times a year and ask for money whenever possible. Not to mention that the teachers, more often than not are complete jokes. "Diverse" PLEASE! All those kids care about are looks and money. Any outcasts are looked down upon. Nothing but cliques. If you are a middle schooler who eats lunch with high schoolers, it is considered "social suicide" this also applies to those who tote wheely backpacks. Everyone at this school needs to get over themselves. Honestly.

Their diversity is a joke. It does NOT reflect the demographics of the neighborhood/city. They keep saying that diversity is a priority but this doesnt seem to be the case. Also, my student has shared with me that there is a bit of a racial tension here. My kid, who is black, says that children taunt him because of his color but also because he is on a partial scholarship.

My son is now finishing his 4th year at Oakwood (he's attended since the 7th grade). While my son thoroughly enjoys the culture of the school -- great arts, politically open-minded, accepting of diverse personalities, lots of engaging social opportunities - none of these descriptors carry over into the academic programs. Teachers are, with only a few exceptions, RIGID. They teach they way they have taught, the content they have taught, with the exacting point-driven grading policies they have used for years. There is very little flexibility, practically no student-driven learning, a huge emphasis on grades and compliance with teacher's requirements to earn grades. My son has gotten straight As since the 7th grade, but the hours and hours of inauthentic and minutiae-focused work he needed to do to earn those marks has been extremely disappointing and dispiriting. The several times we have sought out the administration to discuss these issues have been pointless; they will express deep concern for our son's emotional state, but will not offer any flexibility or options for him to pursue authentic and meaningful work in lieu of the lockstep, time-demanding work. Oh, the hypocrisy.
