Our daughter started attending Mark Twain last week (from Coeur d'Alene Elementary) and after some trepidation given the very low overall score on this site, we could not be happier with our choice. The score dates from 2016 which is when the new principal Dr Ford took over the school and made some fundamental changes including letting go various less than capable teachers. For this incoming 6th grade the local family population has doubled and academic achievements are rising along with it. We love the Arts and our daughter has drama and dance class every day - both teachers are wonderful and professional. She is in the advanced studies class which is very diverse and I feel properly challenging for her. After school possibilities include SLAM (music), soccer, basketball, volleyball as well as a fun Boys & Girls Club of Venice where they get tutoring help with homework if needed and then can play outside with coaches.Honestly, I am convinced that coming here despite the many skeptical comments I heard from other parents over the past year was the best decision for our daughter and for us as a local (European) family that cherishes neighborhood community and a stressfree commute by bike or scooter every day. This school is still highly underrated which was true for schools like CDA 6 or 7 years ago when local families started to fully embrace it. A similar dynamic is happening at Mark Twain so hop on board, you won't regret it!

Top notch local school. Best Kept Secret in town! The assessment scores seem bogus! Twain kids always do great at the local High School according to our friends and neighbors (Academic Decathlon, HS counsel, great athletes, student newspaper, UC acceptance.) Public local school that is accountable, effective, and free!

The teachers are nice and are there for you... But the students are extremely inappropriate/immature and make it impossible to get any work done in class. It's such a huge problem that not even a full semester in school over 600 students were expelled. It also causes difficulties for teachers because they can't teach their lesson. There is quite a bit of bullying and trust me lots of bad grades. Over 3/4's of my class have straight F's. Also sexual remarks from students; which made me very uncomfortable. If you have no other choice put your kid in this school but if you can try to put them in Palms Middle School (90034 is the zip code); it's way extremely better.

Mark Twain Middle School is officially back as a wonderful option for local students. The district has installed a new principal, Dr. Althea Ford (from Beethoven) and a full time Orchestra teacher. There is a massive push in the neighborhood to return students to their local middle school. Come see all of the changes! Twain has a full gymnasium, large theatre, and loads of outdoor space. In the arts, the school now offers Orchestra, Drama, Ceramics, Bell Choir, among others. There is a thriving garden program, Seeds To Plate, where core curriculum is linked with outdoor garden work. There are multiple language offerings as well, including Spanish, French, Mandarin and Korean. The after school program is amazing, with opportunities to run a marathon or make movies. The staff is talented, dedicated, hard working, and committed. Dr. Ford has increased supervision and there are no safety issues. The children are provided with a wide breadth of curriculum and top notch instruction. There is an honors track for GATE students and other high achievers. There is an active parent base, FOMT, working hard to support the administration and teachers through fundraising and community building. All in all, Mark Twain is a great place to be these days! The test scores will rise as the community returns. Do yourself a favor and check it out. Venice/Mar Vista finally have a middle school to call their own. It is an exciting time!!
