Hollywood Schoolhouse Ratings & Reviews

I can only speak to the early education program, but our experience has been fantastic. Two teachers for a class of 12 means that my daughter gets all kinds of individual attention. The curriculum is developmental, so it meets the child where s/he is. The focus on kindness, respect, mindfulness, alongside socialization and academics is inspiring, as is the true commitment to diversity (unusual for private schools in LA). In addition, the school has hours that work for working families and a robust after-school program.

My son started HSH in kindergarten and is currently in the 3rd grade. Since enrolling here he has thrived! HSH has supported my child in becoming a confident, compassionate, and curious citizen. HSH embodies all the reasons why I felt it necessary for him to be in an independent school:1. Small Class Size It was important that my son be in an environment that was not overwhelming in size. At HSH he has the opportunity to create friendships with all of his classmates2. Individualized AttentionTeachers know my son and are able to assess/address his needs, if any. They do an excellent job of communicating with parents and are always available to meet. The school uses Kaymbu which allows parents to view photos/videos of their child’s school day. Teachers at HSH are aware of what each child is doing. 3. DiversityIf my son attended his local public school he would have been the only child of his ethnicity there. At HSH diversity comes in many forms: male faculty is represented in the lower elementary school and in the pre-school; my son is able to interact with families from different countries; ethnic diversity is represented in the student body and in staff; and the school’s commitment to socio-economic diversity is reflected in their generous financial aid policy. 4. Caring CommunityAt HSH, every staff member from the Head of School to the Cafeteria Manager knows my son. He knows he is cared for and feels comfortable and safe expressing his thoughts and feelings. Nowhere is this more evident than in the new Head of School. Ms. Ilse’s warm personality is instantly felt by those around her. She opens humbly to advice on how to improve the school and most importantly she is approachable. Her enthusiasm towards educating children trickles down to all staff members.5.Progressive CurriculumIt was important that my son not be taught to simply pass a test. HSH has a well balanced mix of both traditional and progressive curriculum that challenges children but also comes with supports in place to meet them where they are at. They are big on project based learning and my son comes home excited each day to share what he is working onAs one can tell from this lengthy review I am a proud HSH parent. HSH is not just a place you drop your child off for 7 hours it is truly a community in which families can become lifelong friends.

We've had both our children attend the schoolhouse and have been there for over ten years. Ilise Faye the new head of school is fantastic and is the heart of the place and loves what she does. We've had nothing but great teachers from preschool through sixth and have made some of our best friends from this place. Early on the school had some growing pains, but is now a well oiled machine with campus additions in the last three years making this a gem of a school that thrives on word of mouth. I've heard some people say the school isn't academic enough. This hasn't been our experience as last year, my sons class had over 93 acceptances to secondary schools including Harvard Westlake, Archer, Marlborough, Oakwood, Buckley and Campbell Hall among others. the school does and excellent job in honing in on your child's strengths and also undergirding any weaknesses. Parent community is involved and classes generally seem to bond.

Hollywood Schoolhouse is an amazing school with a special community and vibe that you need to see in person to experience. We have been here for 7 years and our kids have excelled not only in traditional academics, but also in confidence to express their individuality and creativity. The school has several beloved teachers and administrators who have been here for over 20 years, including the new Head of School who is absolutely passionate about children and education. The campus has transformed the last couple of years with new buildings and outdoor space.

This school has let more than one student leave the campus without authorization, including mine, and has been fortunate enough to escape serious consequences.
