We took a tour with Larry Kligman, the Head of School. He showed us around the school. Told us he thought we made the perfect family for Heschel. Introduced us to all the teachers and had all the kids greet us. You know all the phony stuff. We then applied for my daughter and son. Our kids did a shadow day. Lara Martin, the admission's director, called me urgently. She said our son was not listening and complained of a headache and was bored. So I pulled him out of the application process. She was very rude and lacked compassion. Later that day we found out he had a mild concussion. My son also said the school was not challenging and boring. After about a week I asked could my kids redo their shadow day (just to give the school and my son a second chance given the effort of applying in the first place) and she replied "not a good fit." How cold was that? Larry never even responded. I wrote them several emails since with no reply from either of them. This school went from being a loving Jewish to a cold-hearted place in less than 24 hours. Is this how Jewish people should treat their own? This places does everything in their power to convince they care about you and your kids until they find out your kid(s) are not "perfect." We're not looking for a perfect educational setting but a Jewish one that offers warmth, love and nurturing (education is the cherry on top) community. Shame on Larry (a distant man) and Lara (a cold-hearted person).

We have had our rounds of attending many schools in the valley after raising three kids to the ages of 16, 13, and 10. Heschel is by far one of the most balanced schools we have been to. ALL of the teachers that have taught our son have been passionate about their job and truly care to understand each child to be able to provide the right kind of motivation and support to help them succeed and feel self confident. The principal and the counselor went as far as attending an after school performance on on a weekend morning to help one child who needed to be caught in a positive light. If that's not dedication, I don't know what is. When problems arise, they have been professional and transparent about the facts, give each individual (parent or child) their turn in explaining their side and make sure not to assume based on presumptions. The consequence has always fit the crime appropriately and attention was placed to make sure that it's a learning experience... that the child knows that they/we care about them. A lot of communication takes place and no one feels like a victim. I always feel comfortable approaching the teachers, the counselor, the principal, and the educational coordinator with any concerns and never fear that my words will later be used against me or my child. They are receptive to feedback and ideas, and they make the community environment feel safe, warm, and comfortable, allowing for growth. With all this, they still hold the kids to high educational standards and encourage the kids to advocate for themselves. The teachers make themselves available to discuss any concerns even at night. They don't just call me when there's an issue... they have called to tell me when my son stood up for a friend, or when they were impressed with his answers in class, or how well he handled himself when he was sick on a school trip. Every phone call starts with a positive exchange, and ends on a positive note. Since starting at Heschel, my son has become more dedicated about his homework, about getting good grades, and about behaving well than ever before. He (by himself) chose to take extra summer classes to go up in math level next year... And the best part is that it's not out of fear. It's because he knows they believe in him and he doesn't want to let them down. We feel very lucky to have found this gem of a school!

I have had 3 children attend this school. You will not find a more caring, nurturing environment. The quality of education they receive is directly related to the effort they expend. I know for a fact that those who have left this school complaining are the same parents who have been to several schools and are never satisfied or their children had disciplinary issues that they are not addressing at home. If you are an involved parent in your child's life than this school is guaranteed to instill the values and morals that will make you proud. Kids from this school are consistently accepted to top secular private schools and transition with no problems.

Our experience is that this school is not caring. The funny thing is they do everything to convince you they care about your children. We have not seen caring teachers who do everything to promote your child - as you would expect... after all, we pay a lot of money. But it's never enough for this school. The only thing they care about is that you give them more and more money. The principal is a distant man. There is too much "politics" and people are afraid to talk. Teachers are afraid to talk with parents. They treat parents as a professional hazard, not as partners. We expected warmth and loving community, and were very disappointed.
