Covington Elementary School Ratings & Reviews

We love Covington! We had one kid go through here already and he is flourishing in Middle School. My younger one still goes here and loves it. The teachers my kids had so far have all been really good. I personally think parents have a huge role to play at home in how much kids enjoy their time at school and how they perform. So we do also run a pretty tight ship at home. While it is difficult to balance the all the commitments when both parents are silicon valley professionals, we can usually manage to volunteer a couple of hours a few times a year. Doesn't have to be all or nothing. In every case, the staff interactions have been very good. The community is also awesome with lots of well-intentioned., helpful people. Go Coyotes!

I used to go here and I've got quite a lot to say. Well, I started here in 4th-grade. I had a strict teacher. (Those who went here would know) But even though she would yell non-stop, her teaching methods were quite effective. Most of which I know now is because of her. But even though they were effective, I was stressed because I didn't know if I would have to stay in at lunch or recess to finish any work she found unsatisfactory. This system was very fair, but maybe it went little too far. It was way too stressful for fourth graders. I was lucky to make it alive out of her class. If you weren't tough and resilient to her offensive comments, you would dread coming to school. Also, she definitely played the favorites game. She would put those who got the best grades and paid the most attention in the front of the classroom, and the people who had difficulties learning the same speed as those in the front, in the back. Again, a lot of her comments were very derogatory. She would say that she pitied the wife of a particular student and that another particular student would never make it into a prestigious private school (which she did). Enough of 4th grade, onto 5th grade. Long story short, I should've been thankful for my amazing 5th-grade teacher. She used effective teaching methods, even more effective than my 4th-grade teacher. She made learning fun, using engaging tools. Like when do you get to make a movie for a math project? I didn't realize how lucky I was to have a teacher like that until I moved. But then, 5th grade also had its downsides. This fifth-grade teacher also showed a lot of favoritism. She had this group of students who she would be super nice to. I wasn't in that group. It seemed like she didn't like particular students. I'm not really sure why. Sometimes, I would feel like I didn't belong in her class. The lesson plans that were supposed to be fun and engaging became suddenly dull and boring. Once, a teacher was sitting at a desk and I happened to walk behind her. I saw that she was looking at Instagram. On a positive note, we had student teachers! I think they were studying to become a teacher at some college in the area. They were funny and relatable. I felt like the student teachers were better teachers than some of the other teachers who weren't students. Overall, my experience at Covington Elementary has been just okay.

I have 3 daughters at Covington and have been a part of this school community for almost 7 years. We absolutely value the experience that our children are receiving in the Los Altos School district and specifically Covington Elementary. The teachers, administration and staff are completely approachable and have our children's educational and social interests in mind. What we truly find priceless is the active family community. The amazing amount of hours that the parents volunteers spend at the school have made the entire elementary school experience worthwhile. The teachers receive an incredible about of support from the families which allows our children to have a much more enriched experience. I cannot say enough how incredibly critical these early years are and that Covington has far and away exceeding our expectations for a neighborhood public school.
