MCDS has made me come out of my shell. from an early age, they teach students respect, responsibility and kindness. They teach the students to be inclusive and welcome everybody. This is a great school

MCDS is a pretty mixed bag; in our case for our child, the bad outweighed the good. Biggest mistake we make.Positive? Resource rich school sprinkled with a number of potentially very strong teachers. The school does lack of options and program though it can come off as incredibly privileged.Bad? Only 1 teacher in 9 years actually challenged our child to do better. The administration panders to a small group of suburban homemaker social climber who try to run the school and tyranize anyone who is not their kind who has the guts to speak up. Very white - the only school I know of who does not advertise diversity numbers, in part because at about 35% kids of color it trails similar schools in Marin and the City by 5-15% (40-50%)

Whoever wrote the one-star review dated May 15 was writing about a different school. The writer stated that her son went to MCDS instead of Galileo High and, because of his experience, she sent her two daughters to Lowell High instead of MCDS. Galileo and Lowell are public HIGH schools in SF. Marin Country Day is a private K-8 in Marin. There is no possibility that her kids went to or could have gone to MCDS for high school. I wish Great Schools would vet obviously errant posts (also, "School Leader" is Lucinda Lee Katz, not Kathy Jones). For what it's worth, MCDS is like Hogwarts--joyful and magical. My son (and his dad) love it.

My son started attending MCDS for middle school after attending public school in Mill Valley. I struggled with public vs. private but now, in our second year at MCDS, I honestly feel that it is one of the best decisions I've ever made. If you've taken a school tour, you know the setting is beautiful and the amount of resources are ridiculous. But what impresses me is the caring and commitment of the teachers, a clear teaching philosophy, and a constant willingness to self-examine and adjust the curriculum. The teachers really know (and like) your child; the staff is talented and encouraged to be creative and innovative in its approach and focused on how kids solve problems, not just "the right answer" . I did worry about the lack of economic diversity (or more to the point--feeling like I am the economic diversity). But the parent community is very welcoming and I've never felt out of place or uncomfortable. And the kids--I mean every kid I've met--is composed, mature and smart. There are cliques (this is middle school after all), but the administration is quite attentive and responsive to any unusual situations.

My two children have attended MCDS since kindergarten. It's an amazing school, and I recommend it without reservation. The school works hard to create a strong community that includes students, parents, teachers and staff. The curriculum is excellent. And the teachers are top-notch. The school welcomes and celebrates diversity.
