We love this school. Both of our kids attend Nesbit, and are always very happy. We've been part of the community for 6 years now, and plan on staying for the Middle School program as well. The teaching is tremendous (close relationship with Columbia Universities Teacher's College, CAASP scores rising annually), and the culture built over the last 6-7 years is very healthy. It's a hidden gem, offering the small school experience of a K-8. Reading and writing intervention team is amazing. We are definitely happy to be here.

I know most people rave about the principal, so I must be one of the few who can't stand her ways. You can label me whatever and stop reading here, or you can also be coming from a different culture and bear with me.I had my son in the TK class, 4yo when the school year started. (He was in Ms. Sexton's class, who btw was great, but unfortunately was relocated to Cipriani for 2017/2018)I'm not gonna go over everything that annoyed me with the school, I'll just mention my main gripe: the morning assembly. Is it a nice way to share info and wake older kids up? Yes. Does it make sense to bring every class from TK (4/5 yo) to 8th grade (14yo) ? No. The TK and K kids had no idea what the principal was talking about most of the time, and were just standing confusingly in line for nothing, especially during the winter. The few times it was rainy, she would do it in the multi-purpose room: great way to spread germs as it was packed with kids.As a parent, the morning gathering made me want to kill myself. Imagine somebody yelling stuff out of a new-age parenting book in a microphone at 8am. (hey, at least it wasn't religious or patriotic BS, I'll give it to her). Maybe the 7-10yo kids like it, but as an adult it's unbearable, sorry. (I admit I may have a problem with authority too...)Now, why would I even subject myself to this when I could have just dropped my son and left like a normal parent? Because TK classes encourage (and by encourage I mean give you the evil eye if you don't) parents to stay the first 15-20min of the day in the classroom to help your kid settle in, read to them, write "love notes", etc.So you have to suffer the "listeners and learners" number EVERY. SINGLE. DAY., then walk your kid to the bathroom, then his classroom, spend another 15min (on good days) in there until you can finally go by your day. Total time for the morning routine: 30min to 45min! Those of us with a long commute will appreciate. Some of us tried to find a way around it: drop your kids directly in the classroom a bit later. But nope, they started monitoring the gates and giving out tardy slips, even for TK kids, no exceptions. So my advice to the principal if she ever reads this: one size doesn't fit all. Understand not many parents can spend over 30min dropping their kid at school. We tried our best but a little accommodation on your side wouldn't hurt either.

This school has one of the most progressive principals in teh school district from what I've seen so far and heard from staff, parents and friends (giving informative and inspiring daily morning assemblies on the playground which quite a few parents attend) and this school feels more inclusive from what i can tell so far since my child transferred from Fox Elementary in his second half off Kindergarten. There he had been teased and excluded (in Kindergarten!) by other children quite often. I have not seen these bullying behaviors in 2015 at Nesbit. I don't believe it is tolerated and staff are ever-present and there for children of all grades (even the principal knows all the kids names!!

My daughter wants to go to this school everday including weekends, it has never happened before as she always used to cry or hesitate in previous schools. Nesbit rocks, wonderful teachers, super energetic principal and perfect ways to teach. You will always feel connected to all school activities. Best thing about the school is morning assembly, in a simple way it brings smiles and energy to the kids. Overall a great school, keep it up:)

Having raised two children who were in elementary school about 25 years ago, I now am a Grandparent of a grandson in kindergarten who is currently at Nesbit Elementary School. I fell compelled to write a review because of how wonderful this school is. It all begins with the Principal who is like no other I have seen. She rallies the children on a daily basis with her dynamic personality, passion and leadership skills. The teachers , at least the kindergarten teacher I have had contact with are passionate, intelligent and are a direct reflection of their Principal and the spirit she has. My daughter is a teacher in a high ranking private school. She believes this school to be as good as they come . I cannot imagine a better school for my grandchild to attend. I would rate this school a 10 in every facet of the elementary school spirit.
