I have 2 students at Veritas and I couldn't be happier!

My experience was with Great Hearts North Phoenix. I was dismayed at the information given in the tours & kindergarten orientation versus the actual operating practices at the school. School tours and orientation do not tell you that school policy is to refuse the ONLY recess to a kindergartner who needs to use the restroom during class, or to take away the ONLY recess to any child who is late to school. Ninety percent of students are driven to these schools. Students cannot talk to friends in the hallways, thus even older students walk around like drones before school, outside of the building. On day 2, my kindergardener was afraid of getting into trouble, and being sent to head master's office. The environment is very punitive, very negative reinforcement. Communication from the head master is like your mother ordering you to do something. Then, an unwanted physical altercation leveled by the assistant headmaster told me the administration has as little respect for the parents as they do for the students. Ask around. You will find a lot of families who have left the Great Hearts system for various reasons. If you have a happy, carefree, spiritful child, the quickest way to remove his/her personality is to send the child to Great Hearts. I couldn't withdraw my child fast enough when I saw how this school operates. Life is too short to make my child's education so miserable.

Archway Classical Academy claims to offer students a unique experience, but having taught for several years, and watching my stepdaughter go through the Great Hearts system, I could not be more disappointed. There is no true difference between this school and any other quality public school (most of which also offer fun projects and cross-curricular activities). It is true that teachers come and go. Assessment scores cannot possibly measure student success when the students have not actually taken the test (it is also important to note that the AzMerit test is achievement-based, not skill-based, anyway). I cannot wait until fifth grade passes and we can finally take my stepdaughter out of this school and into one that provides more opportunity for social interaction, skill-based learning, and more rigorous classroom work, as opposed to additional homework (as apparently Archway feels R&R time is particularly important - moreso than being in the classroom). If it was up to me alone, as a teacher, I would never send my child here.

You experience over the past school year has been nothing short of amazing. The students just received their year books and looking through the pictures gives a quick glimpse into how happy these students really are. The joy on their faces is clear to see. They make every activity a learning opportunity in such a fun way, such as incorporating physiology into PE, classical composers into art, and art techniques and their creators into art. Every grade seems to have really cool projects, like the first grade Egypt museum with costumes and fully decorated classrooms for the event. I am sure there are so many other great things to say about this school, but I'm not trying to write a novel here!

It is unfortunate that the public school system in Arizona is already at a disadvantage comparatively, and that many quality teachers look for jobs out of state, as what is left is an array of charter schools that promise to lift young minds to greatness through Latin classes and mandates that refuse to allow literature through any modern canons into the school. Students are pushed to move at a rate that is quicker than that of a typical public school, but in the process, many are left behind, receiving Bs and Cs on their report cards (elementary students should not be subject to letter grades in the first place) when they cannot compute a long division problem in under 30 seconds. Students are forced to memorize and perform poems once a month, and for what purpose? Could they not learn public speaking skills through engaging assignments that actually require thought, rather than rote memorization? The lack of emphasis on social development at Archway is also astonishing. French classes replace imaginative play in the kindergarten rooms, and a sad tarmac is the school's solution to a playground. Teachers regularly update parents with weekly newsletters, but when it comes to conferences and one-on-one communication, they seem flabbergasted. It seems to me that many of my fellow parents send their children here for the "prestige" the Great Hearts name seems to carry in their social circles, but when push comes to shove, I worry that my child will not be able to compete in the collegiate world as a result of attending this school.
