If your child fits into the ASA mold, he/she will be fine. If not, be ready for a lot of tears, struggles and crushed self-esteem. Both of my children left ASA feeling defeated and stupid (their words), but have thrived at another school. I appreciate the skills my kids learned in the arts programs (reading music, playing piano) but the stress and mental health toll was not worth it.

My experience at ASA has been absolutely amazing. Students who o here are very lucky. They have a variety of performing art classes. These include Choir, Orchestra, woodwinds Brass, Guitare, Ballet, Musical Theater, and more. The teachers are so kind, and I've made some of my closest friends here. Every year, the 7th-12th graders have the option to go on a Disneyland trip. There are 2 school Plays and 2 school Musicals every year. They they aren't the bad ones either. I personally think real stars could ris up from this school. ASA is one of the best things that has happened to me my whole entire life.

ASA is fueled by hype. Yes, there are very strong students at this school that could learn anywhere. They also generally have resources from home that are available should they need any help at all. There are also some very talented teachers, but they are few and far between. There is a mold they want to you fit and if you can't fit it, you will spend your time here trying desperately to fit in to no avail. My oldest son's confidence was shattered at this school by an ineffective teacher who seemed incapable of providing the instructional help he needed.

I know my situation puts me into a position to be biased and hear only the horror stories of the school. But having known current and former students there, I feel like I need to share what I've heard; When I was a younger, everyone wanted to go to this school after elementary school. Many of my friends were artistically inclined. Some were truly gifted artists, other liked plays, others were musical, and some just liked the sound of going to an 'arts' school. Now, many people are clouded by it's past reputation, but the ugliness is starting to catch up to it. Half of everyone I knew who was my age who went there left. Those who remained wished they had, whether they'd admit it or not. If there's supposed to be bullying prevention at any point including now, the students are not hearing it. It's picked some of the worst patterns of public school to emulate in a charter school setting. With an ego and fanaticism without any of the work I'd expect from a private religious institution. More and more unnecessary homework, catty clicheness, intolerance, inflexibility academically. I understand it's an arts school, but it's shown that those musically applied are better at math. Actors of various degrees are better suited towards humanities in general. Reading and writing is an art too that gets all but ignored. And STEAM doesn't really exist for ASA, as their sciences and technology classes are inadequate compared to all their counterparts. Prejudice, favoritism, even bits of racism are present. College preparedness that was once one of the best in the state is officially behind. All of my friends ended up arguing quite viciously with at least one of their respective teachers, especially arts. Some from personal or political rants the teachers would make completely out of context at the wrong time, some on grounds of opinions on subjective subjects, and some outright academic. Some of my younger friends and older friends ended up learning bad technique that needed heavy correction later on. Others were otherwise suppressed of their own unique style. I am absolutely appalled at the rating. It is completely undeserved. I'm sure there are kids excelling here, it but is not a all encompassing accepting place.

Thank you for my education. Some of it might eventually be of use to me. Enroll at your own risk, and only if you trust your family shrink.
