Salt Lake City’s average rent reached $1,268 in December, after a 2.2% increase since last year. Utah’s most populous city and a renter-majority city (52%), Salt Lake City is a diverse and vibrant place to live in, with apartment rents below the national average of $1,462.

This December, the average rent for an apartment in Salt Lake City has increased less than in other surrounding cities such as West Jordan ($1,223, up 3.8%) and West Valley City, where rent went up 6.3%, reaching $1,198.

What it costs to rent in the largest renter hubs in the Salt Lake City area

A renter-majority city itself, Salt Lake City (52%) is surrounded by other cities popular among renters. The city with the largest renter share is Provo, where renters make up 61% of the city’s households. Provo apartments go for $1,454 on average, which is 4.5% more compared to last year. Following a 4.4% increase, renting in Midvale (57%) averages on $1,193 a month as of December. Ogden comes in fourth with 44%, where apartments go for $987, after a 4.0% annual increase. In Clearfield (43%), the average rent is $1,106 after a significant 5.6% increase compared to last year.

The priciest and cheapest cities for renters in the Salt Lake City area

At $1,454 a month, Provo is the priciest city for renters in the Salt Lake City area. Herriman is the second most expensive with an average rate of $1,418, while South Jordan’s $1,363 average puts it in third place.

Ogden rentals are the most budget-friendly in the Salt Lake City area, with an average price of $987. For renters in search of more affordable options, next up are Taylorsville rentals, going for $1,062 per month. Clearfield apartments are the third least pricey, with a $1,106 monthly average as of December.
