Overall, renters had to pay $48 more than they did at the same time last year, according to the latest rent survey from Yardi Matrix. However, July also displayed the slowest month-over-month increase since February, which at 0.2% is a clear signal that peak rental season is nearing its end. The trend is in line with last year\u2019s data \u2013 once the busy late spring to early summer period winds down, rents are expected to slow their growth throughout the rest of the year.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h3>Renting in Iowa\u2019s cities in July 2019<\/h3>\n<p>The average rent in Iowa cities is generally lower than the national average rent. The average rent in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rentcafe.com\/apartments-for-rent\/des-moines-ia\/\">Des Moines<\/a> reached $901 per month in July, up by 1% year-over-year or $9 more per month above what renters were paying a year ago.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<strong>fastest growing rents<\/strong>\u00a0in July happened in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rentcafe.com\/apartments-for-rent\/council-bluffs-ia\/\">Council Bluffs<\/a>, where rental apartment prices increased by 8.7% over the year ($73 more expensive than last year). <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rentcafe.com\/apartments-for-rent\/altoona-ia\/\">Altoona apartment<\/a> prices saw the second-highest annual increase, jumping by 3.8% ($35), while <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rentcafe.com\/apartments-for-rent\/west-des-moines-ia\/\">West Des Moines<\/a> had the third-fastest rent increases, up by 2.9% ($28). Among the cities analyzed, only\u00a0<strong>Johnston <\/strong>registered an annual rent drop, down by 0.7% ($8 less expensive than in July 2018).<\/p>\n<p><script id=\"infogram_0_1ec3ff21-54ce-46b1-a1ba-a0640d95f511\" title=\"Iowa - RentReport July\" src=\"https:\/\/e.infogram.com\/js\/dist\/embed.js?OPh\" type=\"text\/javascript\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Of the cities analyzed, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rentcafe.com\/apartments-for-rent\/ankeny-ia\/\">Ankeny <\/a>apartments are\u00a0the state\u2019s<strong> most expensive for renters<\/strong>, with an average rent of $1,122\/month, followed by\u00a0apartments in <strong>Johnston<\/strong>, where the average rent is $1,099.
