Nationally, rents maintain a strong month-over-month growth, but the annual increase is the slowest we\u2019ve seen in 18 months.<\/p>\n<p>Residential rents are rising\u00a0steadily across markets, with the third month in a row sprouting a 0.3% month-over-month jump.\u00a0Compared to last May, renters pay $35 more on average, according\u00a0to the latest\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.yardimatrix.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">Yardi Matrix<\/a>\u00a0data on apartment market trends.<\/p>\n<h3>Renting in Wisconsin&#8217;s cities in May 2019<\/h3>\n<p>The average rent in Wisconsin is generally lower than the national average rent. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rentcafe.com\/apartments-for-rent\/milwaukee-wi\/\">Renting in Milwaukee<\/a> is now $1,185, after a modest 0.6% month-over-month increase.<\/p>\n<p>Of the cities analyzed, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rentcafe.com\/apartments-for-rent\/mequon-wi\/\">Mequon apartments<\/a>\u00a0are <strong>the state&#8217;s most expensive for renters<\/strong>, averaging $1,927, followed by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rentcafe.com\/apartments-for-rent\/brookfield-wi\/\">apartments in Brookfield<\/a>\u00a0with 1,497 per month. At $1,350 per month,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rentcafe.com\/apartments-for-rent\/wauwatosa-wi\/\">Wauwatosa<\/a>\u00a0is the third-most expensive rental market in Wisconsin.<\/p>\n<p>On the flipside, <strong>the cheapest cities in Wisconsin to rent an apartment<\/strong>\u00a0are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rentcafe.com\/apartments-for-rent\/south-milwaukee-wi\/\">South Milwaukee<\/a> ($813),\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rentcafe.com\/apartments-for-rent\/kenosha-wi\/\">Kenosha<\/a> ($1,028) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rentcafe.com\/apartments-for-rent\/waukesha-wi\/\">Waukesha<\/a> ($1,030).<\/p>\n<p>If we look at <strong>5-year rent changes<\/strong>, Kenosha\u00a0rents picked up speed as the city saw the highest rent increase in the entire state \u2014 up by 25.98% ($212) since 2015. Runner-ups are Mequon (with a 24.16% rent spike or $375 more than in 2015), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rentcafe.com\/apartments-for-rent\/oak-creek-wi\/\">Oak Creek<\/a>, up by 18.76% ($172) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rentcafe.com\/apartments-for-rent\/madison-wi\/\">Madison<\/a>, up by 18.17% ($191).<\/p>\n<p><script id=\"infogram_0_159823f6-8ed7-419c-b69d-cf4c1e552512\" title=\"Wisconsin - RentReport May\" src=\"https:\/\/e.infogram.com\/js\/dist\/embed.js?UIr\" type=\"text\/javascript\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>The <strong>fastest growing rents<\/strong> in May were also in Mequon, where prices increased by 12.1% over the year. Renters here now pay as much as $208 more per month, on average, than they did in May 2018. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rentcafe.com\/apartments-for-rent\/greenfield-wi\/\">Greenfield\u00a0apartment<\/a> prices saw the second highest annual increase, jumping by 6.9%, $68 more expensive than the same month last year.
