Nationally, rents maintain a strong month-over-month growth, but the annual increase is the slowest we\u2019ve seen in 18 months.<\/p>\n<p>Residential rents are rising\u00a0steadily across cities, with the third month in a row sprouting a 0.3% month-over-month jump.\u00a0Compared to last May, renters pay $35 more on average, according\u00a0to the latest\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.yardimatrix.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">Yardi Matrix<\/a>\u00a0data on apartment market trends<\/p>\n<h3>Renting in Iowa&#8217;s cities in May 2019<\/h3>\n<p>The average rent in Iowa&#8217;s cities is generally lower than the national average rent. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rentcafe.com\/apartments-for-rent\/des-moines-ia\/\">Des Moines<\/a> boasts an average rent of $906 per month, up by 2.4% ($21) year-over-year.<\/p>\n<p>Of the cities analyzed, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rentcafe.com\/apartments-for-rent\/ankeny-ia\/\">Ankeny apartments<\/a> are\u00a0<strong>the state\u2019s most expensive for renters<\/strong>, with an average rent of $1,123 per month, followed by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rentcafe.com\/apartments-for-rent\/johnston-ia\/\">apartments in Johnston<\/a>, where the average monthly rent is $1,114. Waukee\u00a0ranks third, as renters here pay $1,083 on average for an apartment.<\/p>\n<p>On the flipside,\u00a0<strong>the most affordable cities to rent an apartment<\/strong>\u00a0in Iowa are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rentcafe.com\/apartments-for-rent\/urbandale-ia\/\">Urbandale<\/a> ($836), and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rentcafe.com\/apartments-for-rent\/clive-ia\/\">Clive<\/a> ($843).<\/p>\n<p>If we look at<strong> 5-year changes<\/strong>, Ankeny boasts a spectacular 20.62% spike in rents. Renters here pay on average $192 more each month than they did in 2015. Runner-ups are Des Moines and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rentcafe.com\/apartments-for-rent\/council-bluffs-ia\/\">Council Bluffs<\/a>, up by 20% ($151) and 17.23% ($133), respectively.<\/p>\n<p><script id=\"infogram_0_cc850cce-e9c9-4984-8696-f00c1c63c1d4\" title=\"Iowa - RentReport May\" src=\"https:\/\/e.infogram.com\/js\/dist\/embed.js?I6t\" type=\"text\/javascript\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><strong>The fastest growing rents<\/strong> in May were in Council Bluffs,\u00a0with prices increasing by 7.9% y-o-y.
