Once a major trading post, St. Louis has continued to attract industry over the years and is now home to a large diversity of businesses<\/a>, from healthcare and manufacturing to retail and financial services. Among other big-name companies that have chosen to set up shop in the city, Swedish furniture retailer IKEA opened the doors of its high-profile, 380,000-square-foot store in the Midtown Cortex Innovation Community on September 30, 2015. Spread over 21 acres, the facility will bring approximately 300 new jobs<\/a> to the area.<\/p>\n

Supported by a growing economic sector and high demand for city living, construction activity has been picking up in several neighborhoods around St. Louis, particularly in the downtown area<\/a> which is covered in office towers and high-rise condominium complexes. The mixture of historic and new gives the city a unique charm that we tried to capture in a cool then-and-now slideshow which we have put together using Google Street View<\/em> images.<\/p>\n

1. Tower at OPOP, Downtown West<\/a><\/h2>\n

Year built: 2014<\/strong><\/p>\n

This high-rise is home to 128 luxury apartments and penthouse lofts with convenient access to the heart of the Central Business District. Residents enjoy perks such as a club room and terrace, garage parking, and discounts at neighborhood shops and restaurants. When it opened its doors to residents in 2014, the tower was the first new residential building to have been built in downtown St. Louis since the 1960s<\/a>.<\/p>\n
