where the two cities differ the most. As of late August 2026, the average rent in Atlanta is $1,804 per month, compared with Miami’s average rent of $2,773. That’s a gap of almost $970 per month, and the difference holds across every apartment type:

Studio: $1,486 in Atlanta vs. $2,265 in Miami

One-bedroom: $1,627 in Atlanta vs. $2,450 in Miami

Two-bedroom: $1,901 in Atlanta vs. $2,995 in Miami

Three-bedroom: $2,216 in Atlanta vs. $3,741 in Miami

The gap grows with apartment size. A studio costs about $780 more in Miami, while a three-bedroom costs about $1,525 more.

Buying isn’t any easier in Miami, where the average home price is $719,719 compared with $416,575 in Atlanta. Miami does have a slightly lower mortgage rate, at 5.84% vs. 6.11%.

Utilities

Utilities are about the same in both cities. Energy averages $227.98 per month in Atlanta and $230.06 in Miami, a small difference of about $2. Phone service is $195.76 in Atlanta and $198.85 in Miami.

Together, the two bills come to about $424 in Atlanta and $429 in Miami. That’s not enough to change your decision, but it’s worth knowing that Miami’s higher cost of living doesn’t carry over to these bills.

Groceries and food

Atlanta comes out a little ahead at the grocery store, though the differences are small. Here are some examples:

Milk (1 gallon): $4.72 in Atlanta vs. $4.90 in Miami

Eggs (dozen): $4.91 in Atlanta vs. $5.03 in Miami

Bread (loaf): $4.31 in Atlanta vs. $4.93 in Miami

Ground beef (1 lb): $7.84 in Atlanta vs. $8.12 in Miami

Coffee (13 oz): $6.61 in Atlanta vs. $6.26 in Miami

Eating out shows a bigger difference. For example, a pizza averages $12.01 in Atlanta and $15.00 in Miami, and a hamburger runs $5.36 vs. $6.40.

Transportation

Drivers will notice a small difference at the pump. A gallon of gas averages $2.93 in Atlanta and $3.13 in Miami, about 7% more.

Car maintenance costs go the other way. For example, a tire balance costs about $61 in Miami compared with about $81 in Atlanta. Your commute and how often you drive will likely matter more than either of these numbers.

Entertainment

Atlanta also has a slight edge on entertainment. A movie ticket averages $15.89 in Atlanta versus $17.39 in Miami, while a yoga class costs $24.17 compared with $28.67, respectively. Even a six-pack of beer is a little cheaper in Atlanta, at $10.87 versus $11.92 in Miami.

Wine is one exception, with a 1.5-liter bottle averaging $11.41 in Miami compared with $11.75 in Atlanta. Overall, though, Atlanta is easier on the wallet when it comes to nights out and everyday entertainment.

Health care

Health care is one area where Miami costs less, which stands out given how expensive the city is overall. A doctor visit averages $120.82 in Miami compared with $137.33 in Atlanta. The dentist shows a bigger gap, at $105.13 in Miami vs. $141.59 in Atlanta, a difference of more than $36 per visit.

An eye exam follows the same pattern, at about $91 in Miami vs. about $129 in Atlanta. Prescription drugs and ibuprofen cost about the same in both cities. For renters who see doctors often, these savings add up, though they’re unlikely to offset Miami’s higher rent.

The verdict: Which city is right for you?

Atlanta is the more affordable city for most renters, mainly because of housing. Someone moving from Miami to Atlanta could spend about $970 less per month on rent alone, along with small savings on groceries, gas and entertainment.

Still, Atlanta doesn’t win every category. Miami is cheaper for doctor, dental and eye care visits, and it’s slightly cheaper for coffee and tire balancing. Utilities are close to even.

The right choice depends on your job, your commute and the expenses that matter most to your household. Use this cost-of-living comparison as a starting point, then weigh it against what you want from your daily life.

Ready to make a move?
