Its food scene is diverse, with an emphasis on farm-to-table cuisine; its downtown is extremely pedestrian-friendly; and the University of Wisconsin-Madison is a wellspring of art and culture. Start at Capitol Square<\/h2>\n

When we reached out to local contributors, one place popped up more than any other: Capitol Square. Turns out, if you want to experience the heartbeat of Madison, that\u2019s where you need to go! \u201cMadison is one of those cities that feels both vibrant and grounded at the same time, and there\u2019s a lot to experience in a short visit,\u201d says Bobbi Petersen, local photographer and owner of Bobbi Petersen Photography<\/a>. \u201cI always tell people to start on the Capitol Square. Walk the loop, grab coffee (Michelangelo\u2019s is my favorite!), and if you\u2019re there on a Saturday, the Dane County Farmers\u2019 Market is a must.\u201d<\/p>\n

That market, locals say, is more than just a place to shop\u2014it\u2019s a snapshot of the city\u2019s personality. \u201cAt The Deliciouser<\/a>, we love all things local and are big foodies,\u201d says Mayra Linares. \u201cYou can\u2019t go wrong with a trip to a farmers\u2019 market, and Madison has a ton of options no matter the season. If you stay in town, stroll the Dane County Farmers Market, then walk down to our shop and restaurant. Fuel up with our lunch or dinner menu, then take home a few spice blends to complement your market haul!\u201d<\/p>\n

Walk State Street to campus<\/h2>\n

From the Capitol, Madison unfolds in a straight line, channeling the city\u2019s energy down State Street toward the University of Wisconsin\u2013Madison. \u201cHead down State Street toward the University of Wisconsin campus,\u201d Petersen says. \u201cIt\u2019s full of energy, shops, and great spots to stop along the way.\u201d<\/p>\n

It\u2019s also one of the city\u2019s most reliable spots to wander without a plan. \u201cMadison\u2019s usual go-to spots for those ready to get their steps in with some window shopping or great eats: State Street, Willy Street, and Memorial Union Terrace,\u201d adds Brittany Lange of Madison\u2019s Holt Real Estate Team<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Stay for sunset at Memorial Union Terrace<\/h2>\n

Follow State Street far enough, and you\u2019ll end up at one of Madison\u2019s most iconic gathering places. \u201cThe Memorial Union Terrace is one of my favorite places in the city,\u201d Petersen says. \u201cSitting by the lake with a drink, listening to live music, and watching the sunset is about as \u2018Madison\u2019 as it gets.\u201d In warmer months, the experience extends beyond the patio. \u201cIf you\u2019re visiting in warmer months, getting out on the water\u2014whether that\u2019s kayaking, paddleboarding, or just a lakeside walk\u2014is worth it.\u201d<\/p>\n

For those who plan their visit accordingly, it\u2019s the perfect place to wind down. \u201cThen end the day with a pitcher of local beer or a waffle cone of your favorite ice cream (made at UW\u2013Madison) at the Memorial Union on campus,\u201d Linares says. \u201cSit outside and watch a magical sunset in our gorgeous city!\u201d<\/p>\n

Eat your way through the city<\/h2>\n

Madison\u2019s food scene is integral to everyday life, from casual stops to destination dining. \u201cI always recommend exploring some of the local restaurants and event spaces,\u201d Petersen says. \u201cMadison has an incredible food scene and a strong sense of community, which you can feel in everything from small businesses to larger venues throughout the city.\u201d Some of her favorites\u2014Garver Feed Mill, Cento, Public Parking, and Canteen\u2014offer a good starting point, but part of the appeal is discovering your own.<\/p>\n

“Madison offers a great mix of outdoor activity, local food, and community events,” said Isabel Rivera-Kloeppel of the Sprinkman Design Collective<\/a>. “A visit isn\u2019t complete without trying classic cheese curds and stopping by the Dane County Farmers\u2019 Market, where you can explore local vendors around the Capitol Square.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Go to the source at Vitruvian Farms<\/h2>\n

For a personal taste of the region, Linares suggests heading just outside the city limits (about 10-15 minutes). \u201cIf you have a car, a visit to Vitruvian Farms is a must; we use their produce, and they carry our blends!\u201d Turns out, just about everything grown on the farm stays close to home. You\u2019ll see their ingredients on Madison restaurant menus of all types. Home cooks are also welcome to shop on-site for The Deliciouser\u2019s blends, but also produce, eggs, dairy and meat, or you can order groceries and have them delivered to you!<\/p>\n

Good to know:<\/strong> The farm is open year-round, Wednesday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Sunday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.; and closed on Monday and Tuesday.<\/p>\n

Stroll through the city\u2019s parks and gardens<\/h2>\n

Some people say that Madison\u2019s pace shifts noticeably once you step into one of its 290+ parks and green spaces around the city (fun fact: about 95% of Madison\u2019s residents live within a 10-minute walk<\/a> of a park!). Linares gave us a couple of suggestions on where to begin near the city. \u201cNearby is Tenney Park, where you can continue your walk along the Yahara River and see both lakes,\u201d she says. \u201cA bit further down Willy St and Atwood Avenue lies Olbrich Gardens. Stroll through their outdoor gardens for free!\u201d<\/p>\n

Time your visit around a seasonal event<\/h2>\n

The natives say that timing your visit can open a different side of the city to enjoy. \u201cDepending on the season, Madison offers amazing outdoor spots to look out for,\u201d says Lange. \u201cConcerts on the Square is a team favorite.\u201d And Madison\u2019s seasonal events are surprisingly, well, seasonal. Despite typical winter temps between 15 and 30 degrees F, one of the locals\u2019 favorites is the city\u2019s frozen-lake festivals, where Madison literally turns its lakes into event spaces for ice skating, festivals, and winter activities.<\/p>\n

In the spring, you can enjoy the Wisconsin Film Festival hosted by the University of Wisconsin-Madison. In the fall, check out the Taste of Madison featuring food and live music all around Capitol Square on Labor Day weekend.<\/p>\n

The summertime brings a huge list of exciting events, including Make Music Madison, a citywide music festival on the summer solstice, where you\u2019ve got your pick of hundreds of performances to see in one day. The Art Fair on the Square is also extremely popular, as is the Madison Night Market, where you\u2019ll find local vendors, art, food, and music all in one downtown street festival.<\/p>\n

Wander through Madison\u2019s art galleries<\/h2>\n

When you are<\/em> ready to step inside, Madison\u2019s arts scene offers plenty to explore. \u201cThere are tons of great museums and galleries around,\u201d Lange says, \u201clike the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art (MMoCA) inside the Overture Center and the Chazen Museum of Art, to name a few.\u201d<\/p>\n

MMoCA is a downtown staple on State Street that hosts a wide range of rotating modern and contemporary exhibits, installations, and film screenings. It also has a gorgeous rooftop sculpture garden to enjoy on nice days. The Chazen Museum of Art is located on the UW-Madison campus and is one of the largest art museums in the state. There, you\u2019ll find over 25,000 works spanning from ancient to contemporary from around the globe.<\/p>\n

Good to know:<\/strong> MMoCA and the Chazen Museum both offer free admission! MMoCA is closed on Monday and Tuesday, but opens on Wednesday from noon to 6 p.m., Thursday from noon to 9 p.m., Friday from noon to 6 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday from noon to 6 p.m.. You can enjoy the Chazen Museum Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., and on Saturdays and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m..<\/p>\n

Spend an evening at the Overture Center<\/h2>\n

Besides its association with MMoCA, the Overture Center is an iconic cultural anchor in the city on its own, often hosting multiple events at once. On any given day, you might watch a Broadway touring production in one theater and a local dance performance in another. The Madison ballet, symphony, and opera all have residencies in the Center, too. Beyond performances, the Overture Center also plays a steady role in everyday life in Madison. Its public galleries are open for casual visits, and the building itself\u2014designed by architect C\u00e9sar Pelli\u2014has become a recognizable part of the downtown landscape.<\/span><\/p>\n

Madison has a fascinating history that has shaped its personality over the past couple of centuries (give or take a decade or two); so, we thought a visit to the Wisconsin Historical Society<\/a> would be a great way to get to know it better. \u201cA great way to make the most of a visit to Madison is to take some time to learn about the city\u2019s past,\u201d says the Society\u2019s PR and communications specialist, Kendall Poltzer. \u201cThe Wisconsin Historical Society offers a range of affordable history walking tours each summer, themed around topics like the hidden history of Capitol Square, Madison\u2019s myths and mysteries, Black history, and LGBTQ+ history. The tours are a great way to learn something new, whether you are a local or visiting for the first time.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Society\u2019s headquarters building on Library Mall on UW\u2013Madison\u2019s campus is also a must-see spot. Constructed between 1896 and 1900, it is an impressive example of Neo-Classical Revival architecture, with a beautiful library reading room featuring ornate skylights and a second-story overlook flanked by grand columns.\u201d<\/p>\n
