Although everyone wanted a piece of the Big Easy, the city has seen its share of challenges, too, from racial tensions to economic shifts to the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. However, throughout its ups and downs, New Orleans endures as a symbol of cultural richness, survival, and celebration.<\/p>\n

It’s no wonder New Orleans locals love to share the city\u2019s magic! If you\u2019ve never been to NOLA, you\u2019re in luck. We asked a few residents, business owners, and creatives to share their go-to things to see and do in the city, and they certainly rose to the occasion! Read on for 11 locals-recommended things to do in New Orleans.<\/p>\n

1. Ride the Canal Street Ferry to Algiers Point<\/h2>\n

\u201cMy hidden gem would be to take the Canal St Ferry to Algiers Point,\u201d says Matthew Foster of Matthew Foster Photography<\/a>. \u201cDating from circa 1719, it is the 2nd oldest neighborhood in New Orleans (second only to the French Quarter) and affords incredible views of the skyline. It also features the best coffee shop in town, Congregation Coffee. It\u2019s also home to Toute de Suite (a great breakfast place) and the Barracuda taco yard.\u201d<\/p>\n

Good to know:<\/strong> The Ferry terminal is located where Canal St. begins at the river, between the Aquarium of the Americas and the Four Seasons Hotel. $2 per ticket (exact change only or download the app) for a 7-minute boat ride across the Mississippi. 2. Eat with purpose<\/h2>\n

\u201cI’m always excited to share what makes New Orleans so special,\u201d says\u00a0Barrie Schwartz, founder and CEO of My House Events<\/a>. \u201cThis city thrives on connection, creativity, and community\u2014and that\u2019s exactly what you\u2019ll find if you explore with intention. As someone who works closely with BIPOC, LGBTQ+, and women chefs in New Orleans and beyond, I always seek out places rooted in both flavor and purpose!\u201d<\/p>\n

Barrie\u2019s ideal foodie day? \u201cStart with a coffee from Petit Clouet in the Bywater, then stroll through Crescent Park along the Mississippi River. For lunch, Sneaky Pickle is a casual gem with a creative, plant-forward menu.\u201d<\/p>\n

Schwartz also had some excellent suggestions for a night on the town. \u201cFor date night, N7 is a dreamy, hidden-away wine bar with French Japanese cuisine, and Manolito in the French Quarter is a cozy spot with some of the best Cuban cocktails around! Bonus stops: Neyow\u2019s, Bacchanel Wine, and Dakar NOLA for a \u201cdeeply personal and unforgettable Senegalese tasting menu.\u201d<\/p>\n

3. Chill with the fam at The Fly by the river or City Park<\/h2>\n

\u201cWhen people visit New Orleans, I always tell them\u2014yeah, hit the French Quarter, eat all the food, hear some live music\u2026 but the magic\u2019s in the in-between moments,\u201d says\u00a0Mike Nirenberg\u00a0of 504CleanDat<\/a>. \u201cSlow down, explore the neighborhoods, and enjoy the vibe. And don\u2019t miss the spots where locals actually hang out! We go chill at The Fly by the Mississippi River. It\u2019s laid-back, full of families, friends, and folks just soaking up the sun and ship traffic. Bring snacks, a blanket, and a snowball\u2014trust me, it\u2019s a great way to spend an afternoon!\u201d<\/p>\n

Need more family-friendly suggestions? Nirenberg pointed us to City Park. \u201cIf you\u2019ve got kids, City Park\u2019s amusement park is a hidden gem. It\u2019s got that old-school charm, plus space to run around under the oak trees. Total win for everyone.\u201d City Park also houses the\u00a0Sydney and Walda Besthoff Sculpture Garden\u00a0and botanical gardens for a full day of exploring.<\/p>\n

4. Be enchanted by Lake Pontchartrain<\/h2>\n

\u201cFor something peaceful, head to Lake Pontchartrain for sunrise or sunset. It\u2019s beautiful and calm, and there\u2019s nothing like watching the sky light up over the water,\u201d says Nirenberg. Watching the sun rise (or set) over Lake Pontchartrain is a soul-soothing local ritual\u2014no crowds, just sky and water.<\/p>\n

5. Cruise the river in style and explore the music scene<\/h2>\n

New Orleans and Dixieland jazz go together like peanut butter and jelly, which is why visitors flock to the Steamboat Natchez for live music by the Dukes of Dixieland. \u201cIt may be a little touristy, but it\u2019s a\u00a0must,\u201d says\u00a0Marc Becker\u00a0of the Higgins Hotel<\/a>. \u201cThe Natchez is one of the very last true steam-powered paddle-wheelers on the Mississippi. Learning about the city\u2019s history while relaxing with a cold drink in hand is an excellent way to spend an evening in NOLA.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd jazz is just the start,\u201d he continues. \u201cThe musical variety is endless here. From Preservation Hall to Chicky WaWa, the clubs are too numerous to list here. The best way to do it is to pick up one of the many weekly music directories, find a band or a music style you want to hear, and then search it out. Most often it will take you to neighborhoods you didn\u2019t know existed in New Orleans \u2013 another delight for visitors!\u201d<\/p>\n

6. Sample the city\u2019s iconic cuisine and get out for dining and dancing<\/h2>\n

Kristen Rauch of PK Weddings and Events<\/a> gave us some suggestions for places to grab classic New Orleans grub with the locals, starting with Mandina\u2019s in Mid-City. \u201cThis neighborhood favorite is a must for a traditional New Orleans po\u2019boy. Warm, casual, and packed with flavor\u2014it\u2019s comfort food at its best. Brunch at the iconic Brennan\u2019s Restaurant is also a must,\u201d she says, \u201cespecially for their famous Bananas Foster. Then grab a refreshing Pimm\u2019s Cup at Napoleon House, a spot that feels like stepping back in time!\u201d<\/p>\n

Need date night suggestions? Rauch has a couple of those, too! \u201cStart your evening with a curated wine dinner at Copper Vine, where the food is seasonal and the atmosphere is relaxed. After dinner, dance the night away at Vintage Rock Club\u2014a retro-style nightclub filled with great music and energy.\u201d<\/p>\n

7. Don\u2019t skip the zoo<\/h2>\n

New Orleans does get very hot and very humid in the summertime. So, what\u2019s a family to do when it\u2019s like a sauna outside? Rauch recommends the zoo! \u201cThe Audubon Zoo is truly one of the most beautiful in the country\u2014lush, shaded, and perfect for all ages!\u201d says Rauch. It features cooling mist zones and is shaded by ancient live oaks\u2014including the nearby 300-year-old “Tree of Life.”<\/p>\n

Good to know<\/strong>: It\u2019s best to visit the zoo in the early morning or late afternoon when the animals are most active. They\u2019re open daily from 10 am to 5 pm.<\/p>\n

8. Spend a day at The National WWII Museum<\/h2>\n

While it has plenty of sunshine, New Orleans gets its share of rain, too. On rainy days, take\u00a0a trip to the National WWII Museum<\/a>. Designated as the official WWII museum of the US and rated among the best museums in the world by National Geographic, the museum \u201ctells the story of the American experience in the war that changed the world\u2014why it was fought, how it was won, and what it means today\u2014so that all generations will understand the price of freedom and be inspired by what they learn.\u201d<\/p>\n

10. Dance in a second-line parade<\/h2>\n

\u201cFor the real local vibe, hit up a second line parade,\u201d David adds. \u201cIt\u2019s an impromptu street party with brass bands that you just have to experience.\u201d In case you aren\u2019t familiar, a second line parade typically features a main line of official parade participants, such as a brass band, members of a social aid and pleasure club (SAPC), or a funeral procession. The second line (that\u2019s you!) is a crowd of friends, neighbors, and passersby who join in behind the main line\u2014dancing, clapping, waving handkerchiefs or parasols, and celebrating. Second lines happen almost every weekend in different neighborhoods. Check local listings (or just follow the sound of horns and percussion).<\/p>\n

11. Take a swamp tour at sunset<\/h2>\n

And finally, \u201cif you want the ultimate off-beat adventure, take a swamp tour,\u201d says David. If you\u2019re uneasy with the idea of coming face-to-face with a live alligator, take heart. \u201cIt\u2019s less about gators and more about the serene, mystical beauty of the bayou at sunset.\u201d While you can opt for an airboat tour, they\u2019re typically pretty fast and loud. For the most peaceful, immersive experience, try a guided canoe\/kayak tour or a pontoon boat tour. Some companies offer sunset or full-moon versions!<\/p>\n
