Located in central Ohio, Columbus\u2019s easy accessibility and prime location along the Scioto and Olentangy rivers brought plenty of bustling commerce and trade in the 19th<\/sup> century, significantly shaping the dynamic city it is today. And there\u2019s no sign of slowing down. Columbus has a projected growth rate of 35% by 2050<\/a>! There are lots of reasons for the rush: its diverse economy and job market are booming, the cost of living is still affordable, and it\u2019s got a metropolitan city vibe sprinkled with midwestern warmth and charm.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s also no shortage of things to do! The thriving arts and culture scene offers museums, galleries, and theaters. Outdoorsy types will enjoy the city\u2019s parks, trails, bike paths, and one of the best zoos in the country. Oh, and pretty much everyone who comes here falls in love with Columbus\u2019s diverse culinary scene, too.<\/p>\n

If you\u2019re planning a trip to Columbus but aren\u2019t sure where to begin, you\u2019re in luck! A few of the city\u2019s welcoming residents have shared a few suggestions with us that we think you\u2019ll like. Here are some of the most recommended things for visitors (or anyone) to do in Columbus, courtesy of the folks who live here!<\/p>\n

1. Enjoy a night out at Bridge Park in Dublin<\/h2>\n

Daniel Russo<\/a>, a local interior designer and social media influencer\/personality, knows a thing or two about Columbus’s style and culture. One of the first places he pointed us to was Bridge Park in Dublin (a suburb of Columbus), a fashionable riverfront district with amazing dining, entertainment, and nightlife framed by the scenic Scioto River. “It\u2019s a great place to explore,\u201d says Russo, \u201cwhether you’re enjoying rooftop bars or walking across the iconic pedestrian bridge.\u201d<\/p>\n

2. Stock up at the North Market<\/h2>\n

Russo also introduced us to the North Market, a 149-year-old public market attracting vendors from all over Ohio. “It’s a must-visit for food lovers,” he said. North Market offers an incredible selection of local vendors, international cuisine, and artisanal goods. It\u2019s a great spot to grab a bite and experience Columbus\u2019s diverse food scene!\u201d The market hosts regular pop-up events, cooking demos, festivals, and seasonal happenings like Oktoberfest.<\/p>\n

3. Get scientific at COSI<\/h2>\n

Long-time resident and photographer Stacey Ash<\/a> gave us a few family-friendly options that could just as easily become your favorite date place, too, beginning with the (massive!) Center of Science and Industry (COSI). \u201cCOSI never gets old, and there are always new exhibits,\u201d she says, \u201ckids and adults alike enjoy it!\u201d COSI has hands-on exhibits about space, energy, ocean life, engineering, biology, and so much more. And that’s not even including the planetarium, live science demonstrations, and motion simulator rides! Oh, and COSI also partners with NASA and the American Museum of Natural History, so their exhibits are always amazing and up-to-date.<\/p>\n

Good to Know:<\/strong> The museum is typically open Wednesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. However, its hours vary for holidays and events, so you might want to check its updated calendar<\/a> before you head out.<\/p>\n

4. Talk to the animals at the Columbus Zoo<\/h2>\n

\u201cOur zoo is one of the best in the country,\u201d says Ash, \u201cit has me pretty spoiled!\u201d In addition to animals from across the globe in their natural habitats, you\u2019ll also see ocean life, including manatees, sea turtles, sting rays, and a ton of fish species. In the summer, you’ll love the adjoining water park, and if you’re a golfer, the Safari Golf Club is there, too. Be warned: it might take all day (or more) to see everything the zoo offers, so wear comfy shoes and sunscreen! All that walking is well worth it, though. \u201cAnytime I go to another zoo, it\u2019s such a letdown,\u201d says Ash, \u201cIt just never comes close to what we have here!\u201d<\/p>\n

Good to know:<\/strong> The zoo is open year-round, but the hours vary by season. Visit their website to check before you go.<\/p>\n

5. Have a subterranean adventure in the Olentangy Caverns<\/h2>\n

For the adventurous, Ash suggested a day of underground exploring. \u201cThe Olentangy Caverns have a neat story, and it\u2019s really cool to take the tour underground,\u201d she says. The caverns were initially used by the Wyandotte Native American tribe\u00a0as a place of refuge and shelter from enemies and harsh weather. You can still see carvings and markings dating back centuries on the cave walls! The caverns site also offers gem mining, mini golf, a petting zoo, a wooden maze, a playground, and picnic areas.<\/p>\n

Good to know:<\/strong> The caverns are open seasonally (usually March through October). Hours may vary, but they’re typically open from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.<\/p>\n

6. Grab some local grub and picnic in the park<\/h2>\n

\u201cWhen visiting Columbus, the best thing you can do is explore our incredible small business community,\u201d says Eryn Gilson, founder and CEO of Wildbloom Creatives<\/a> and 614 Mom<\/a>. \u201cIt\u2019s more than where you shop or eat; it\u2019s about connecting with passionate people who pour love into their work and into this city!\u201d Gilson recommends \u201cstarting your day with breakfast at Fox in the Snow or Katalina\u2019s, then grab lunch from Katzinger\u2019s or The Brown Bag Deli and picnic at Highbanks or.\u201d Bonus: if you\u2019re lucky, you might catch a glimpse of the bald eagles nesting in Highbanks!<\/p>\n

7. Release your wiggles, enjoy some live tunes, and treat yourself!<\/h2>\n

On those days when outside fun isn\u2019t an option, Gilson suggests taking the kiddos to the Better Together Playnasium or Gymboree Play & Music in the Clintonville area, north of the city. Both attractions are designed for kids 0-6(ish) to play, climb, tumble, crawl, and generally wear themselves out. Also, both attractions offer art and sensory experiences, as well as music-centric experiences. “Don’t miss a performance by Erica Carlson,” says Gilson. “Her shows are pure magic for little ones! Afterward, for a sweet treat, try Little Ladies Soft Serve or Way Down Yonder Beignets.\u201d<\/p>\n

8. Catch a pint at the Crooked Can and cool off at the Hilliard splash pad<\/h2>\n

Thirsty? \u201cCheck out the Crooked Can Brewing Company in Hilliard,\u201d says Gilson, \u201cwhere you’ll find a collection of local shops, food, and drinks all in one space.\u201d It\u2019s a whole community hangout, way more than a brewery! \u201cWhile you\u2019re there, the nearby Hilliard splash pad is a family favorite.” The splash pad is seasonal, free, and open to the public. It features interactive fountains, water jets, and spray features in a gorgeous open plaza. There’s also plenty of shady sitting areas to relax after all that splashing.<\/p>\n

\u201cI wish I could list every business I love,\u201d says Gilson, \u201cCoffee Connections, Simple Times Mixers, Black Dog Pizzeria, Harvest Pizza, the list goes on. Columbus is full of dreamers, makers, and doers who make this city shine. Exploring them is the best way to experience it!\u201d<\/p>\n

9. Get active at the Scioto Audubon Metropark<\/h2>\n

Sean Grabow, owner of Center City Solutions<\/a>, told us about an excellent place to get active outside. \u201cThe Metropark has been my go-to spot for showing clients the outdoor lifestyle Columbus offers, with its amazing rock-climbing wall and obstacle course that rivals anything you’d find in bigger cities,\u201d he says. \u201cLast summer, I took my real estate team there for a team-building event, and we had a blast kayaking and bird watching\u2014 it’s perfect for both adventure seekers and nature lovers looking to stay active in the city!” Check out the park’s schedule if you’ll be around for a while. They offer\u00a0free yoga, nature walks, birding events, and family programs.<\/p>\n

10. Have a glamorous night out at the Ohio Theatre<\/h2>\n

\u201cAs the face of Limitless Limo<\/a> in Columbus, Ohio, I manage marketing outreach for our luxury transportation service,\u201d says Allison Andrews, director of sales and marketing. \u201cThrough this role, I\u2019ve gained a deep understanding of local features and events in Columbus.\u201d For an indulgent experience, she recommends a night out at the Ohio Theatre. The theater is listed as a national landmark and is the “official theater of the state of Ohio.” And once you start browsing the performance schedule, you’ll see why! The Columbus Symphony, BalletMet Columbus, and CAPA summer movie series call the theatre home, and you’ll find a variety of touring Broadway shows, too.<\/p>\n

11. Channel your inner cosplayer at the Ohio Renaissance Festival<\/h2>\n

\u201cFor unforgettable memories, the Ohio Renaissance Festival is a standout event,\u201d says Andrews, \u201coffering immersive history and thrilling performances!\u201d Located just outside Columbus, the Ren Festival truly does have something for everyone. The kiddos can go to Knight school, practice their archery, and enjoy fairy tale puppet shows while the adults enjoy local craft beers and ciders. You can also pick up a unique gift while you\u2019re there, with vendors selling jewelry, leather goods, swords, soaps, candles, pottery, corsets, and more.<\/p>\n

Good to know<\/strong>: The fair is open on weekends and Labor Day, August 30 to October 26, from 10:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Costumes aren’t required, but they are definitely encouraged!<\/p>\n

12. Get lost in the Franklin Park Conservatory<\/h2>\n

For those who love art and nature (who doesn\u2019t?), Bennet Heyn, CEO of Sell House Columbus<\/a>, recommends a relaxing day meandering the Franklin Park Conservatory! \u201cThe conservatory hosts these amazing seasonal events like Blooms & Butterflies in spring and Pumpkins Aglow in fall, which really showcase our city’s creative side!\u201d she says. \u201cJust last month, I took some out-of-town clients to their Chihuly glass exhibition, and they were blown away by how this hidden gem combines nature, art, and community in such a unique way.\u201d The conservatory also features rotating art exhibits, live performances, and creative installations, and it hosts events like cocktail nights, horticulture classes, plant sales, and yoga in the garden.<\/p>\n

13. Eat, drink, and be entertained in Short North<\/h2>\n

\u201cShort North is hands-down one of Columbus’s most exciting areas,\u201d says Matthew Coffman, Columbus local and owner of Coffman Legal<\/a> Services. \u201cIt’s where you can find the monthly Gallery Hop, which brings out the best in local art and performances. Plus, it’s packed with amazing restaurants and shops. For a great meal, I suggest you go to Northstar Cafe, which is known for its phenomenal burgers and cozy vibes. And if you’re looking for a fun spot to grab a drink, Short North Pint House is a local favorite of mine with an open-air Biergarten and over 75 rotating beers!\u201d<\/p>\n

14. People-watch at the Scioto Mile Promenade<\/h2>\n

There are plenty of outdoor activities to choose from when the weather\u2019s nice, including at the Scioto Mile Promenade. Karee Furey-Hertenstein, sales and marketing manager for Renaissance Tech<\/a>, explained why the promenade is a favorite in Columbus. “It is a stunning public park in downtown Columbus spanning the Scioto River from Battelle Riverfront Park to Bicentennial Park. You can walk, bike, or jog along the riverfront, take in the views from Coleman’s Pointe overlook, or just sit back and enjoy the fountains at Huntington Plaza,\u201d she says. \u201cIf you’re looking for a bite to eat nearby, Northstar Cafe has great food, or you can grab a craft beer at Wolf’s Ridge Brewing!\u201d<\/p>\n
