Two other Western locations that made it into the top 30 are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rentcafe.com\/apartments-for-rent\/portland-or\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Portland, OR<\/a>, (#15 in the U.S. and #3 regionally) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rentcafe.com\/apartments-for-rent\/sacramento-ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sacramento, CA<\/a> (#24 in the U.S. and #4 in the West).<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the Northeast only had one entry in January \u2014 Philadelphia at #5 \u2014 maintaining a presence in the top despite facing stiff competition from other regions.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Meet the newcomers: Renters are longing for sunnier spots this January<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>In our January rental activity report, seven new cities joined the top 30 most sought-after rental destinations, the majority of which are located in the South. In first place among the newcomers is Las Vegas at #11 in the U.S. after a 69-position jump in the rankings since last January.<\/p>\n<p>Following closely is Augusta, GA, at #13, fueled by an impressive 237% increase in favorited listings, whereas Amarillo, TX, climbed 19 spots to secure 16th place. With a 34% drop in available apartment listings, it\u2019s clear that competition among renters will be tight in this Texas city in the near future.<\/p>\n<p>Another notable newcomer to our ranking, Virginia Beach, VA, (#28) saw a surge in engagement with favorited listings up 55% and saved searches increasing by 22% compared to one year ago.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, and making a comeback this month are Columbus, OH, at #10, followed by Fayetteville, NC, at #25. In the latter, a 7% drop in available listings signals fewer options for renters. The regions are defined according to the U.S. Census Bureau.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The cities were ranked based on a city-level rental activity score. Full points were awarded to the most desirable city for a particular metric, while the zero-point level was set slightly below the worst city\u2019s value. Cities that lacked sufficient information regarding specific metrics were awarded zero points.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Beginning in August 2023, the city that obtained the highest total score was awarded 100 points and all total scores of the following cities were adjusted accordingly.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>To calculate each city\u2019s score, we ranked them according to four metrics and their averages as of the most current month in 2025 versus the same month in 2024.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>1. Availability Rate (Maximum score: 40 points)<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>The availability rate score was calculated by dividing the total vacant units at the city level for the most recent month by the total units and a year-over-year comparison of the same. The lowest rate received maximum points.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>2. Page Views (Maximum score: 30 points)<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>The page views score was calculated as the total number of monthly page views for the most recent month at the city level divided by the total renter population in the city and a year-over-year comparison of the same. Page views are defined as a unique user interaction on a specific page in a 30-minute window.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>3. Favorites (Maximum score: 15 points)<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>The favorites score was calculated as the total monthly rental listings added to favorites at the city level for the most current month divided by the total renter population in the city and a year-over-year comparison of the same. A favorite is defined as a rental listing saved to favorites by a website visitor.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>4. Saved Searches (Maximum score: 15 points)<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>The saved searches score was calculated as the total number of monthly saved searches at the city level for the most current month divided by the total renter population in the city and a year-over-year comparison of the same.
