However, the Northeast is picking up steam after two new locations in the region entered the ranking \u2014 Buffalo, NY, and Boston, MA.<\/p>\n<p>Last month\u2019s favorite \u2014 Kansas City, MO \u2014 dropped four positions, losing its two-month winning streak. On the other hand, bustling New York City boroughs are inching up closer to the top of the list, with Bronx and Queens climbing five and six positions, respectively.<\/p>\n<h2>Arlington is the most in-demand city for renters in July<\/h2>\n<p>Below are this month\u2019s top 10 cities for rental activity, as well as the biggest shifts in the last 30 days.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>1. Arlington, VA<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rentcafe.com\/apartments-for-rent\/arlington-va\/\">Arlington, VA<\/a>, has taken the top spot as July&#8217;s most desirable city for apartment seekers on RentCafe.com, surpassing last month&#8217;s leader, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rentcafe.com\/apartments-for-rent\/kansas-city-mo\/\">Kansas City, MO<\/a>. The surge in popularity can be attributed to the significant increase in views, saved searches and favorited listings for Arlington properties on our website.<\/p>\n<p>Compared to last year, there has been a remarkable 76% increase in views, a 43% rise in saved searches, and a notable 41% growth in favorited listings. These impressive numbers have propelled Arlington to claim the #1 position in our July Rental Activity Report.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>2. Orlando, FL<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rentcafe.com\/apartments-for-rent\/orlando-fl\/\">Orlando, FL<\/a>, has emerged as a strong contender in the rental market, closely competing with Arlington for the top spot this month. The City Beautiful proudly leads a list of popular Florida cities for renting, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rentcafe.com\/apartments-for-rent\/fort-lauderdale-fl\/\">Fort Lauderdale<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rentcafe.com\/apartments-for-rent\/hialeah-fl\/\">Hialeah<\/a>. Surpassing its previous record at #8, Orlando continues to captivate renters&#8217; attention and attract their interest.<\/p>\n<p>The evidence of Orlando&#8217;s appeal is clear: There has been a remarkable 31% increase in listing views on RentCafe.com compared to last year. Furthermore, the number of favorited apartments has more than doubled during this time period, indicating a strong desire among apartment dwellers to make Orlando their new home.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>3. Cincinnati, OH<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>This month, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rentcafe.com\/apartments-for-rent\/cincinnati-oh\/\">Cincinnati<\/a> experienced a significant rise in rental activity on RentCafe.com, moving up one position from last month, to secure third place in the top 30 list of most in-demand cities for renters.<\/p>\n<p>With 4% fewer apartments available, there was a notable increase of 34% in listing views when compared to the previous year. This substantial jump in positions for two consecutive months is a testament to the city's growing appeal.<\/p>\n<p>A significant contributing factor to Omaha's surge to the top of the ranking is the remarkable increase in renters' interest in renting in the city. Compared to a year ago, renters are now favoriting ten times more apartments for rent on RentCafe.com. Additionally, there has been a notable 25% rise in rental listing views within the same timeframe.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>5. Kansas City, MO<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>After consistently claiming the top spot as the most sought-after location for two consecutive months, Kansas City has experienced a slight decline, now ranking fifth in our July rental activity report.<\/p>\n<p>Nevertheless, when examining the year-on-year changes, the situation appears solid for this Midwestern metropolis. Traffic on Kansas City apartment listing pages on RentCafe.com has surged by an impressive 49%, showcasing a strong interest among potential renters. Moreover, compared to last July, renters have favorited over four times the number of listings, indicating a heightened preference for properties in Kansas City.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>6. Minneapolis, MN<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Another Midwestern town knocked down from the podium is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rentcafe.com\/apartments-for-rent\/minneapolis-mn\/\">Minneapolis<\/a>. After reaching third place last month, the city now sits in the #6 position.<\/p>\n<p>The Minneapolis rental market has become increasingly popular among renters, with a clear indication being the 22% decrease in available apartment listings compared to last year. Nevertheless, both page views and favorited listings dropped in numbers compared to June, allowing other cities to surpass Minneapolis in the race for the top spot.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>7. Atlanta, GA<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>A-Town has maintained its position at number seven in the rankings, the same as the previous month. However, it has achieved a higher score since June. This improvement can be largely attributed to a notable 27% increase in saved searches compared to this time last year.<\/p>\n<p>During July, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rentcafe.com\/apartments-for-rent\/atlanta-ga\/\">Atlanta<\/a> witnessed a decline in renter interest, as evidenced by a 27% decrease in traffic on rental listing pages compared to the same period last year. Additionally, Atlanta has been surpassed by Arlington and Orlando as the leading Southern cities in the ranking.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>8. Albuquerque, NM<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Albuquerque's position in our ranking has experienced fluctuations. The city initially held the third spot in April and May, subsequently dropping to fifth in June, and is currently the eighth most popular city for renters in the country.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the slight descent, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rentcafe.com\/apartments-for-rent\/albuquerque-nm\/\">Albuquerque apartments<\/a> remain highly favored among renters. In fact, page views on RentCafe.com have more than doubled in this city compared to the previous year, and there has been a significant increase of 43% in the number of rental listings being saved to favorites within the same timeframe.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>9. Bronx, NY<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Boasting its highest rank this year, the most affordable borough in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rentcafe.com\/apartments-for-rent\/new-york-city-ny\/\">New York City<\/a> stands out as the sole Northeastern location to make it into our top 10 list. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rentcafe.com\/apartments-for-rent\/bronx-ny\/\">The Bronx<\/a>'s lively atmosphere and cost-effective nature relative to other NYC boroughs have propelled it up by an impressive five positions.<\/p>\n<p>The increase in interest in renting in the Bronx is evident from the significant rise in searches and favorited listings on RentCafe.com. Renters are actively seeking out opportunities to live in this borough, as indicated by the doubling of searches being favorited compared to last year. This surge in interest has also translated into a remarkable 107% increase in favorited listings.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>10. Portland, OR<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Portland has proudly clinched a spot in the top 10, solidifying its position among the very best. The city has seen a notable increase in its favorited listings on RentCafe.com. With an impressive 84% growth compared to July last year, renters' interest in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rentcafe.com\/apartments-for-rent\/portland-or\/\">Portland apartments<\/a> is growing.<\/p>\n<p>Apartment dwellers here bumped up viewership of rental properties by 10% year-over-year. The South emerged as the frontrunner with an impressive 11 cities making it into the top 30 ranking. Following closely were the Midwest and Northeast regions, with 10 and five cities, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>The South outshone other popular regions by securing the top two spots, while Cincinnati stood out as the highest-ranking city for the Midwest, claiming the prestigious third place nationally.<\/p>\n<p>Representing the Northeast, the Bronx secured the ninth spot, underscoring the region's presence in the rankings and joining other major hubs. The city reached #13, <span class=\"ui-provider bxk bxl c d e f g h i j k l m n o p q r s t bxm bxn w x y z ab ac ae af ag ah ai aj ak\" dir=\"ltr\">due to 18% fewer available listings and 44% more favorites by renters<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>Following a steep downward trend,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rentcafe.com\/apartments-for-rent\/detroit-mi\/\"> Detroit, MI<\/a>, got knocked out of the top 30, ending up all the way at #125. This substantial drop marks the most significant descent on our list. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rentcafe.com\/apartments-for-rent\/raleigh-nc\/\">Raleigh, NC<\/a>, also slid to the 36th spot from last month\u2019s top ten.<\/p>\n<h2>Meet the newcomers: the enduring charm of the South<\/h2>\n<p>For our July rental activity report, seven new entries made our top 30 most in-demand cities for renting, a mix of major rental and job hubs and suburban towns, and the majority are located in the South.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rentcafe.com\/apartments-for-rent\/cleveland-oh\/\">Cleveland, OH<\/a>, is July\u2019s highest-ranking newcomer at #17. Despite getting 50% fewer points on favorites compared to June, saved searches on RentCafe.com almost doubled this month, giving Cleveland an 18-spot boost.<\/p>\n<p>After missing from last month's report, Tacoma, WA, makes another great return, similar to the one in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rentcafe.com\/blog\/rental-market\/market-snapshots\/may-rental-activity-report\/\">May's report<\/a>. This July, the city climbed 63 spots, straight to #20. Renters favorited <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rentcafe.com\/apartments-for-rent\/tacoma-wa\/\">Tacoma apartments<\/a> on RentCafe.com more than three times as much as the previous month and more than five times than last year.<\/p>\n<p>In peak rental season, Texas has made its mark by securing its first representative on our top 30 cities list. This milestone has propelled <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rentcafe.com\/apartments-for-rent\/houston-tx\/\">Houston<\/a> to become the most in-demand city in the Lone Star State.<\/p>\n<p>With a thriving job market and serving as a prominent hub for energy, healthcare and aerospace industries, Houston has become an increasingly desirable destination for renters. Their intention to move is made even more clear when looking at the number of saved searches on RentCafe.com, which grew by 69% in the past year.<\/p>\n<p>Newcomer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rentcafe.com\/apartments-for-rent\/boston-ma\/\">Boston<\/a> ranks 25th this month after its listing views on RentCafe.com rose 19% compared to one year ago. Full points were awarded to the most desirable city for a particular metric, while the zero-point level was set slightly below the worst city\u2019s value. Cities that lacked sufficient information regarding specific metrics were awarded zero points.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>To calculate each city\u2019s score, we ranked them according to four metrics and their averages as of the most current month in 2023 versus the same month in 2022.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>1. Availability Rate (Max score: 40 points)<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>The availability rate score was calculated by dividing the total vacant units at the city level for the most recent month by the total units and a year-over-year comparison of the same. The lowest rate received maximum points.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>2. Page Views (Max score: 30 points)<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>The page views score was calculated as the total number of monthly page views for the most recent month at the city level\u00a0divided by the total renter population in the city and a year-over-year comparison of the same. Page views are defined as a unique user interaction on a specific page, in a 30-minute window.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>3. Favorites (Max score: 15 points)<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>The favorites score was calculated as the total monthly rental listings added to favorites at the city level for the most current month\u00a0divided by the total renter population in the city and a year-over-year comparison of the same. A favorite is defined as a rental listing saved to favorites by a website visitor.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>4. Saved Searches (Max score: 15 points)<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>The saved searches score was calculated as the total number of monthly saved searches at the city level for the most current month divided by the total renter population in the city and a year-over-year comparison of the same.
