While some will have spacious apartments, great schools and plenty of outdoor amenities, others will have high costs of living, limited apartment options and fewer jobs.<\/p>\n<p><strong>RentCafe&#8217;s annual ranking reveals 2023&#8217;s best cities for renters, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rentcafe.com\/apartments-for-rent\/charleston-sc\/\">Charleston, SC<\/a>, in the lead, followed by many other beautiful Southern cities.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In order to help renters make an informed choice, we analyzed data for almost 140 cities by looking at <strong>20 relevant metrics<\/strong>. Charleston, SC <\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>South Carolina\u2019s largest and oldest city, Charleston snags this year\u2019s top spot in our ranking of best cities for renters due to an ideal mix of <strong>apartment quality and cost of living <\/strong>\u2014 the third-best in the country \u2014 along with a great score in the <strong>local<\/strong> <strong>economy <\/strong>category. Notably, the port city has made a name for itself on the IT scene as a fast-emerging tech hub by being home to more than 250 tech companies, thus ranking fifth when it comes to <strong>local economy<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Here, the suburban feel offers renters the advantages of living in a big city, without compromising on factors such as air quality or natural amenities. Moreover, our data shows that not only are almost half of the households renting, but with an average of 967 square feet, the size of Charleston apartments is also much larger than the national average. Coupled with a high job growth rate (5.9%), it\u2019s no wonder that Charleston has been crowned the best city for renters in 2023.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>2. Plano, TX<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Having recently started to make a name for itself as the \u201cCity of Excellence,\u201d Plano lands second on our list. Specifically, it received high scores when it comes to <strong>local economy,<\/strong> where it ranks second, as well as <strong>quality of life<\/strong>, for which it ranks sixth.<\/p>\n<p>Plano&#8217;s reputation for producing great academic achievers make it an ideal spot for families looking for a city with excellent public schools, in addition to its great air quality and significant share of high-end apartments (78.2%). Meanwhile, natural amenities and apartments that are larger than the national average (942 square feet) make it a great spot for both families with young children and young professionals. And, the city's large share of high-end apartments (81.3%) is higher than any of the other cities in our top 10. This is further cemented by more than 80% of apartments being situated in top locations.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>4. Atlanta, GA<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Fourth on our list is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rentcafe.com\/apartments-for-rent\/atlanta-ga\/\">Atlanta<\/a>, which ranks high in terms of <strong>cost of living and housing<\/strong>, as well as sixth for <strong>local economy<\/strong>. Of course, the \u201cCity in a Forest\u201d has become well-known for a variety of features \u2014 such as its high-end boutiques, as well as numerous parks, even earning a spot on <em>National Geographic<\/em>\u2019s \u201cBest of the World 2022\u201d list.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, the presence of big household names \u2014 such as Coca-Cola, Delta, UPS, Equifax and The Home Depot \u2014 has led to a job growth rate of 4.3%. Meanwhile, with several tech companies (including iMedX, NCR, Unity and Global Payments Inc.) operating here, Atlanta has been dubbed \u201cSilicon Peach\u201d \u2014 a nickname reflected in CBRE, naming it the eighth-best city when it comes to finding tech talent.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>5. Raleigh, NC<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Dropping from second place last year, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rentcafe.com\/apartments-for-rent\/raleigh-nc\/\">Raleigh<\/a> ranks fifth on our 2023 list of best cities for renters. The \u201cCity of Oaks\u201d scores high in all categories, especially in <strong>cost of living and housing<\/strong>, where it comes in eighth due to its low cost of living and large number of high-end apartments.<\/p>\n<p>Deemed the second-most-educated city in the U.S., Raleigh is a hotspot for new research and development and home to the Research Triangle Park. Accordingly, its healthy job market provides plenty of job opportunities in tech, ranking it 14<sup>th<\/sup> in terms of <strong>local economy<\/strong> and a great spot for young professionals who rent.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Best cities for renters in the South: Strong local economies make Southern cities perfect for young professionals<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>With 65 out of the 140 total cities on the list located in the South, renters are right to pay special attention to this region. Home to the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor also has one of the largest shares of educated residents, as well as a healthy job growth rate.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Leaders by category<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>When it comes to the <strong>cost of living and housing<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rentcafe.com\/apartments-for-rent\/conroe-tx\/\">Conroe, TX<\/a>, scores the highest, with renters here enjoying larger-than-average apartments, the majority of which are high-end. Cities with lower apartment stocks were excluded. A total of 136 cities were included in the ranking.<\/p>\n<p>To determine the best cities for renters, the RentCafe analytics team used a composite index to compare cities across three main categories: <strong>Cost of Living &amp; Housing;<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Local Economy;<\/strong> and <strong>Quality of Life<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The three main categories were compiled from 20 relevant metrics. Each metric received a score based on a minimum and maximum value multiplied by the metric's weight.<\/p>\n<p>To create the categories index, the process of ranking was repeated and then the results were multiplied by each category's overall weight.<\/p>\n<p>Data from Yardi Matrix (a RentCafe sister division) covers apartment buildings with 50 units or more.
