However,\u00a0it seems as though renters are coping with the monotony of spending most of their time\u00a0at\u00a0home by looking for a change in scenery, more space, open-air amenities and better local deals.<\/p>\n<p>More than 10,000 people participated in the survey while looking for an apartment on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rentcafe.com\/\">rentcafe.com<\/a>. In particular, respondents shared how their preferences had changed after a year of staying at home,\u00a0what\u00a0their main concern was while moving,\u00a0or\u00a0how the pandemic had affected their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rentcafe.com\/blog\/apartmentliving\/tips-tricks-renters\/8-questions-signing-lease-agreement\/\">rental selection process<\/a>.\u00a0The survey showed that lifestyle improvement was the main motivator for those looking to rent now, as the top features people search for in an apartment after one year of living in a pandemic are open-air amenities (21%) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rentcafe.com\/blog\/rental-market\/market-snapshots\/apartment-space\/\">more space<\/a> (20%).<\/p>\n<p>This comes in contrast to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rentcafe.com\/blog\/rental-market\/real-estate-news\/survey-of-renter-perception-on-moving-during-covid-19-pandemic-indicates-surprising-optimism\/\">March 2020 renter survey<\/a>, when the top renter preference was the price and the top concern was safety. And, while plans and preferences may have changed since last March and the first <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rentcafe.com\/blog\/apartmentliving\/ways-to-keep-busy-at-home\/\">stay-at-home<\/a> orders, one thing has remained the same \u2014 the optimistic, carry-on attitude of the average renter.\u202f\u202f \u202f <span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><script id=\"infogram_0_2758d4b9-864a-4c99-9a70-076cdd4aa5a1\" title=\"features moving pandemic\" src=\"https:\/\/e.infogram.com\/js\/dist\/embed.js?9Hs\" type=\"text\/javascript\"><\/script><\/p>\n<h2>Better deals, more space, same place<\/h2>\n<p>It wasn&#8217;t just renting preferences that were heavily focused on lifestyle improvement. The reasons for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rentcafe.com\/blog\/apartment-search-2\/moving-resources\/changing-your-address-what-to-know\/\">moving<\/a> were within the same spectrum, as well. For instance, the opportunity to get a better deal was the top reason for moving for 29% of respondents, while the second-most cited reason for a quarter of respondents was the need for a change of scenery.<\/p>\n<p><script id=\"infogram_0_cd6c3856-ce2a-4623-a427-b354929e089d\" title=\"reason for moving\" src=\"https:\/\/e.infogram.com\/js\/dist\/embed.js?LQ1\" type=\"text\/javascript\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Granted, for most of us, finding adequate housing remains a priority regardless of exterior factors \u2013 which\u00a0could\u202fbe\u00a0pinned on the renter\u2019s need for stability.\u202fThe survey also showed that 90% of respondents were looking for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rentcafe.com\/blog\/apartmentliving\/tips-tricks-renters\/get-your-rental-application-approved\/\">long-term rentals<\/a>, most <strong>preferring to remain\u00a0in the same city\u00a0(48%)<\/strong>.\u202fThis\u202f shows that improving housing conditions \u2014 not drastic change \u2014 is the goal.<\/p>\n<p><script id=\"infogram_0_784652c0-a833-44c3-b046-6743fe281ed0\" title=\"destination\" src=\"https:\/\/e.infogram.com\/js\/dist\/embed.js?Ycu\" type=\"text\/javascript\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>The survey also revealed that space and open-air amenities were more important than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rentcafe.com\/blog\/apartmentliving\/tips-tricks-renters\/experts-share-23-strategies-for-working-from-home-with-kids-in-online-school\/\">work-from-home<\/a> amenities. In fact, only 4% of renters chose to move because they could now be more flexible by working remotely. Likewise, in terms of\u202fapartment\u202famenities that became more important during these past months,\u00a010% prioritized a good internet connection, while\u00a0only 5%\u00a0reported needing a home office.<\/p>\n<h2>COVID &#8216;rentsilience&#8217;: Sticking to the plan, regardless<\/h2>\n<p>Of the survey respondents looking for an apartment to move into now, one-third (34%) had moved once before during the past 12 months \u2013 and most of them did so because of a pandemic-related reason.<\/p>\n<p><script id=\"infogram_0_b7471148-1e38-42c6-b5de-c0c2b180a284\" title=\"moved or didn&amp;amp;#39;t\" src=\"https:\/\/e.infogram.com\/js\/dist\/embed.js?fX4\" type=\"text\/javascript\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Looking at those who are just moving now,\u202f33%\u202fsaid that they didn\u2019t move earlier because of the pandemic. This means that 67% of the renters currently looking for a new apartment are committed to making this change now, regardless of the COVID-19 situation. We witnessed the same\u202fcarry-on\u202fattitude back in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rentcafe.com\/blog\/rental-market\/real-estate-news\/survey-of-renter-perception-on-moving-during-covid-19-pandemic-indicates-surprising-optimism\/\">March 2020<\/a>, when 60% of respondents had no intention of postponing their move due to the pandemic, while\u202f56% planned to carry on with their moving plans despite the pandemic.<\/p>\n<h2>First-wave movers, driven mostly by necessity<\/h2>\n<p>After months of staring at the same walls, it\u2019s understandable that some people want to make a move now, if only for a change of scenery. However, many of those who moved back in the spring of 2020 seemed to\u202fhave done so out of need \u2013 not because they wanted to. More precisely, their reasons for moving during those uncertain early days of the pandemic were related to their lease being up or feeling financially insecure.<br \/>\n<script id=\"infogram_0_93a779a2-5a0e-4f72-9137-bd279947a9e7\" title=\"concerns\" src=\"https:\/\/e.infogram.com\/js\/dist\/embed.js?yBG\" type=\"text\/javascript\"><\/script><br \/>\nLikewise, an expiring lease was the main reason for many people who have already made a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rentcafe.com\/blog\/apartment-search-2\/find-apartment-during-pandemic\/\">move during the pandemic<\/a>, while one of their biggest concerns was whether they\u2019d be able to pay rent during this time (32%). Asked what\u00a0they\u2019d\u00a0do differently\u00a0this time around, 34% said they would look for<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rentcafe.com\/blog\/apartment-search-2\/where-in-the-u-s-can-you-live-for-under-500-month\/\"> something cheaper<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><script id=\"infogram_0_0ae3f5e2-2750-4791-8280-dc5cbe71c852\" title=\"effects pandemic moving\" src=\"https:\/\/e.infogram.com\/js\/dist\/embed.js?sRl\" type=\"text\/javascript\"><\/script><\/p>\n<h2><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">A stronger sense of safety <\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">than last year<\/span><\/b><\/h2>\n<div>\n<p>Undoubtedly, moving in times like these poses various concerns regarding safety \u2013 whether that\u2019s during the entire moving process, the specific health standard of the new home or concerns about the risk level of the new area. And, overall, people feel more secure\u00a0about\u00a0moving now than they did\u00a0at this time\u00a0last year.<\/p>\n<p>For example, while\u00a018% of those who participated in the March 2020 survey said they were concerned about whether it was safe to move at that time, only half share that same concern today.\u00a0Digging a little deeper into the numbers, we also found that 9% were now concerned about the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rentcafe.com\/blog\/apartmentliving\/8-diy-household-cleaners-clean-your-house-your-way-with-your-products\/\">hygiene<\/a> standard of the new home, compared to 15% last year. Conversely, 8% of those surveyed now considered living alone for health reasons, whereas only 4% wanted to do so back in March of last year.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Twelve months apart, both RentCafe surveys have shown that, whether by choice or necessity, people keep on moving. And, as we enter the second year of the pandemic, spending time at home has become the norm \u2013 prompting increasing numbers of renters to look for better deals and amenities that make it more pleasant to be there.<\/p>\n<p><script id=\"infogram_0_23f227b2-f83f-48e6-ad60-af35439da049\" title=\"concerns cumulat\" src=\"https:\/\/e.infogram.com\/js\/dist\/embed.js?W3M\" type=\"text\/javascript\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Methodology<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<div>RentCafe is a nationwide apartment search website that enables renters to easily find apartments and houses for rent throughout the United States.
