Just blocks away from the University of Texas and downtown, this peaceful enclave in the city\u2019s midst attracts students, professors, young professionals and families alike \u2014 and all their dogs, too.<\/span><\/p>\n

Where is Hyde Park, Austin?<\/span><\/h2>\n

Part of Hyde Park\u2019s appeal is its great location. The neighborhood\u2019s boundaries are 38th Street to the south and 45th to the north, Duval to the east and Guadalupe to the west.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s directly north of the University of Texas, within a 30-minute walk or 10-minute bike ride. And since it\u2019s just 20 blocks from downtown, the area is within an easy commute of the capitol and downtown offices.<\/span><\/p>\n

History<\/span><\/h2>\n

Before this area was filled with unique homes and great eateries, it had a more sporting reputation. Hyde Park, Austin, was home to a horse racetrack in the mid-1800s, as well as the site of the original State Fair of Texas before it relocated to Dallas.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In 1891, the land was developed as Austin\u2019s first suburb, intended to be an escape for the upper classes. Stately Queen Anne-style homes were built, and an electric streetcar from downtown served the area.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

But by the early 1900s, sales had stalled. So the developers re-marketed Hyde Park as an affordable option for the middle class. A bungalow boom ensued in the 1920s and 1930s, adding to the area\u2019s eclectic mix of housing styles.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Now, Hyde Park is one of the more densely populated neighborhoods in Austin. Single-family homes and duplexes are available to rent, plus more modern apartment buildings on the busier thoroughfares like Duval and Guadalupe.<\/span><\/p>\n

Lifestyle<\/span><\/h2>\n

Hyde Park is a walkable, dog-friendly neighborhood with plenty to do indoors and out. While it is popular with students, don\u2019t worry \u2014 this quiet neighborhood attracts grad-student types rather than hard-partying undergrads.<\/span><\/p>\n

What to do in Hyde Park<\/b><\/p>\n

There is a lot of entertainment packed into this neighborhood\u2019s small footprint. Shipe Neighborhood Park welcomes families with two basketball courts, tennis courts and a playground. There\u2019s also a wading pool where kids can beat the summer heat.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

To the east, golf fans can play the 9-hole Hancock Golf Course, the oldest golf course in Texas! And fitness buffs can stay in shape at the local Hyde Park Gym. This friendly gym is welcoming to the fitness amateur, but it also provides training for Strongman competitions and Olympic weightlifting.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Just north of Hyde Park, Austin, go antique shopping on North Loop at Room Service Vintage or pick up some vinyl at Breakaway Records.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
