Rents in the largest Wisconsin city saw a year-over-year increase of 1.8%, or $21, compared to this time last year and an increase of 0.3% ($4) compared to February.<\/p>\n<h3>Renting in Wisconsin in March 2020<\/h3>\n<p>The average rent in\u00a0Wisconsin cities is generally lower than the national average rent. The fastest-growing rents in March were in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rentcafe.com\/apartments-for-rent\/west-allis-wi\/\">West Allis<\/a>, where rental apartment\u00a0prices increased by 8.6% year over year, $83 more since last year. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rentcafe.com\/apartments-for-rent\/middleton-wi\/\">Middleton apartments<\/a>\u00a0saw the second highest annual increase, jumping by 5.5%, making them $62 more expensive than last year. In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rentcafe.com\/apartments-for-rent\/greenfield-wi\/\">Greenfield<\/a>, prices decreased by 0.9% ($9) compared to last March.<\/p>\n<div style=\"max-width: 700px; margin: 0 auto;\"><script id=\"infogram_0_097c35ed-6c17-496a-aa88-f076dc1e2a4e\" title=\"RentCafe_Wisconsin-RentReport-March2020\" src=\"https:\/\/e.infogram.com\/js\/dist\/embed.js?DIC\" type=\"text\/javascript\"><\/script><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rentcafe.com\/apartments-for-rent\/brookfield-wi\/\">Brookfield apartments<\/a>\u00a0are the state&#8217;s most expensive for renters, with an average rent of $1,498, followed by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rentcafe.com\/apartments-for-rent\/wauwatosa-wi\/\">apartments in Wauwatosa<\/a>, where the average monthly rent is $1,345. On the other hand, the cheapest city to rent an apartment of the cities analyzed is <strong>Racine<\/strong>, with an average apartment rent of $844, being the only one under $1,000.<\/p>\n<h3>The March national average rent went up by 2.9% year-over-year<\/h3>\n<p>The national average rent was $1,474 in March, having gone\u00a0up by 2.9% ($42), in stark contrast to February\u2019s 3.2% yearly rise. This is the first time since 2016 that we see a deceleration\u00a0from February to March (when the\u00a0rental season is supposed to kick off), as the new coronavirus pandemic is beginning to take its toll on the economy and the apartment market.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Under normal circumstances, interest for apartments goes up this time of year, and rent prices would be expected to\u00a0pick up speed in March. But as more and more states urge social distancing, both landlords and residents have begun seeing the effects of the pandemic.
