Rents in the largest Iowa city saw a year-over-year increase of 0.7%, or $6, compared to this time last year and a month-over-month decrease of 0.2% ($2) compared to December.<\/p>\n<h3>Renting in Iowa in January 2020<\/h3>\n<p>The average rent in Iowa cities is lower than the national average rent. The fastest growing rents in January were in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rentcafe.com\/apartments-for-rent\/council-bluffs-ia\/\">Council Bluffs<\/a>, where rental apartment\u00a0prices increased by 6.5% year-over-year, or $55. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rentcafe.com\/apartments-for-rent\/urbandale-ia\/\">Urbandale apartments<\/a>\u00a0saw the second highest annual increase, jumping by 4.7%, making them $38 more expensive than last year. In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rentcafe.com\/apartments-for-rent\/ankeny-ia\/\">Ankeny<\/a> prices dropped by 0.5% ($6) since January last year.<\/p>\n<div style=\"max-width: 700px; margin: 0 auto;\"><script id=\"infogram_0_ac44716a-ef64-4da2-97d0-b5dcbd9f8d9d\" title=\"RentCafe_Iowa-RentReport-January\" src=\"https:\/\/e.infogram.com\/js\/dist\/embed.js?oaT\" type=\"text\/javascript\"><\/script><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rentcafe.com\/apartments-for-rent\/johnston-ia\/\">Johnston apartments<\/a>\u00a0are the state&#8217;s most expensive for renters, with an average rent of $1,128, followed by  <strong>apartments in Ankeny<\/strong>, where the average monthly rent is $1,098. On the other hand, the cheapest city to rent an apartment of the cities analyzed is <strong>Urbandale<\/strong>, with an average apartment rent of $851.<\/p>\n<h3>The January national average rent went up by 3% year-over-year<\/h3>\n<p>The average apartment rent reached $1,463 in January, up $43 since last year, according to apartment data from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yardimatrix.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Yardi Matrix<\/a>.
