Rents in the largest Cook County city saw a year-over-year increase of 2.3%, or $43, compared to this time last year and a month-over-month decrease of 0.2% ($4) compared to December.<\/p>\n<h3>Renting in Cook County in January 2020<\/h3>\n<p>The average rent in Cook County cities is generally lower than the national average rent. The fastest growing rents in January were in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rentcafe.com\/apartments-for-rent\/wheeling-il\/\">Wheeling<\/a>, where rental apartment\u00a0prices increased by 2.3% month over month, or $30. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rentcafe.com\/apartments-for-rent\/des-plaines-il\/\">Des Plaines<\/a>, <strong>Elk Grove Village<\/strong> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rentcafe.com\/apartments-for-rent\/elgin-il\/\">Elgin apartments<\/a> saw the second highest monthly increases, jumping by 0.2%,\u00a0 making them $3 and $2, respectively, more expensive than last month. In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rentcafe.com\/apartments-for-rent\/arlington-heights-il\/\">Arlington Heights<\/a>, prices dropped by 0.9% ($13) compared to December.<\/p>\n<div style=\"max-width: 700px; margin: 0 auto;\"><script id=\"infogram_0_82fa689b-254d-4fb7-ad6e-e9e9a0398df8\" title=\"RentCafe_Chicago_CookCounty-RentReport-January2020\" src=\"https:\/\/e.infogram.com\/js\/dist\/embed.js?2Tq\" type=\"text\/javascript\"><\/script><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rentcafe.com\/apartments-for-rent\/evanston-il\/\">Evanston apartments<\/a>\u00a0are the county&#8217;s most expensive for renters, with an average rent of $1,954, followed by <strong>apartments in Chicago<\/strong>, where the average monthly rent is $1,948. On the other hand, the cheapest city to rent an apartment of the cities analyzed is <strong>Elgin<\/strong>, with an average apartment rent of $1,107.<\/p>\n<h3>The January national average rent went up by 3% year-over-year<\/h3>\n<p>The average apartment rent reached $1,463 in January, up $43 since last year, according to apartment data from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yardimatrix.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Yardi Matrix<\/a>.
