Winston-Salem’s Newest Projects Featured in 10 Time-Lapse Photos

Winston-Salem, NC is known as the ‘City of Arts and Innovation’. How has the city innovated in infrastructure through several major economic pivots? How has this changed the lifestyle and the landscape?

‘Winston’, also known as ‘The Dash’, or the ‘Twin City’, is far more than just an old tobacco town. It is the fifth largest city in North Carolina, and has been named one of the best places to retire by Money Watch. It was the birth place of Wachovia Bank (now Wells Fargo), and has a strong economy with notable healthcare, banking, and education employers. Major companies with headquarters in Winston-Salem include BB&T, Hanes, and Krispy Kreme.

This great city, and its historic districts and architecture has survived and thrived through many major economic and industrial changes. So, how has it also adapted in terms of its real estate and looks? Together with Google Street View we compiled 10 time-lapse images showing the transformation over the last few years. 1. BB&T Ballpark – West End Winston

Year Completed: 2010

The new BB&T Ballpark stadium, home of the Dash, seats 6,500, and is credited by local media for bringing in some of the best crowds in the state. The 50,000-square-foot complex has been praised for its design which blends into the skyline, and offering locally grown foods. In the background are the colorful and modern Link Apartments Brookstown.

2. Link Apartments Brookstown – West End Winston

Year Completed: 2015

These rental apartments in Winston-Salem, NC are located in view of the new BB&T Ballpark stadium. The construction is one of the more modern and colorful designs to grace the local landscape. Features include a pool, game room, new Energy Star appliances, and full gym.

3. One Park Vista – Downtown

Year Completed: 2008

This luxury condominium building was designed in a classic 1920’s revival style by local architects Harbinson Associates. Poor timing led the development to be completed at the bottom of the housing market. Remaining units were sold off at auction in 2010 at a great discount. Condos are within easy walk of shopping, oyster bars, galleries, and cafes.

4. Mud Pies – Downtown

Year Completed: 2013

The Mud Pies child care center entertains youngsters from infants to 5 years old. Built by Davie Construction, who has developed many local banks, churches, apartment buildings, retail shops, and the Tanglewood Aquatic Park in Clemmons, NC, the low rise brick school house blends well with the neighborhood.

5. Milton Rhodes Center for the Arts – Downtown

Year Completed: 2010

The Milton Rhodes center at Holly Ave and Spruce St. is within view of the Winston Tower and GMAC building. Multi-million dollar renovations completed in 2010 completely modernized the 100-year-old structure. It is home to event spaces, visual arts school, the Hanes Brands Theatre, Coffee Park, and the largest annual book and author festival in the Carolinas.

6. Career Center High School South Building – East Winston

Year Completed: 2011

This view from N Martin Luther King Jr Dr. shows the new south building campus. In the background is the Kennedy Campus Tower. Complementing the traditional schoolhouse brick is a modern glass tower, and semi-circle glass lobby. The new structure incorporates an art gallery and cosmetology training center. Technical and Advanced Placement courses prepare students for college and the workforce.

7. Career Center High School North Building – East Winston

Year Completed: 2011

This view of the north building from N Highland Ave. shows how the designers successfully blended the building into the surrounding environment, while managing to incorporate some more stylish modern accents. What you don’t see is the flowering green Sedum rooftop garden. Now in operation for over 40 years, and with expanded space is serving 1,900 local students.

8. Comprehensive Cancer Center – Crystal City

Year Completed: 2013

With the new 6-story addition the cancer center now offers over 530,000 square feet of in and outpatient care. That makes it the largest dedicated cancer hospital in the state. The project involved over 1,417 tons of recycled materials according to an infographic from Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center. It is sleek in exterior design, with an interior atrium and garden.

9. Piedmont Federal Savings Bank – Ballston

Year Completed: 2012

This sizable new branch of the Piedmont Federal Savings Bank is representative of a trend in which banks began building and expanding their own real estate holdings in the wake of the 2008 crisis. Its unique combination of stone, glass and brick towers above surrounding buildings, but retains a classic look which could equally be at home in NYC.

10. The Edge Flats – Ballston

Year Completed: 2015

The Edge Flats on First offer some of the newest luxury apartments in Winston-Salem, NC. Located close to the 421, The Edge complex is easily recognizable for its bright white and blue exterior. Inside the series of buildings in this gated community residents will find stylish rentals, with a community pool, full gym, and dog park.
