Need a quick break from the hustle and bustle of the city, but need to keep cool during the summer? If so, it’s time to hit the beach. The beautiful scenery of sandy beaches and reinvigorating waves are sure to help you disconnect from the stress of everyday life and put you in touch with your vacation self (who might not have made an appearance in quite a while).
The only question that remains is where to find your Mamma Mia-esque retreat. Without further ado, here are the five beach cities that are so idyllic they’ll help you live out your fabulous summer fantasies.
Cannon Beach, OR
Nestled along the Oregon coast, this quaint and charming town has won the hearts of many tourists and was even listed among “the world’s 100 most beautiful places” by National Geographic. And it’s easy to see why: Besides its famous, awe-inspiring Haystack Rock and sea stacks, the town also delights with various artisan shops, galleries, adorable beach cottages and even activities such as whale- or puffin-watching.
Tybee Island, GA
If you’ve ever wondered what the Tybee Light in “from Rabun Gap to Tybee Light” referred to, then take a quick trip down to Tybee Island in Georgia, where the state’s oldest and tallest lighthouse resides. You definitely won’t be disappointed: Although the city is on the smaller size, its sandy beaches will fuel your spirit for adventure with its fossil-hunting opportunities. However, if you’re looking for a more casual vibe, fear not: Sunset cruises and dolphin-spotting are all the rage here.
Block Island, RI
Nature lovers looking to immerse themselves in the beautiful surroundings typical of beach cities will be glad to find out that Block Island promises that and more. Hailed as one of “The Last Great Places” by The Nature Conservancy, this Rhode Island landmark’s biggest draws include pristine, sandy beaches; two historic lighthouses; the Sacred Labyrinth; and the opportunity to go birdwatching at the local National Wildlife Refuge. In fact, this island’s small-town charm is so engaging, you won’t even realize how quick the days are passing until it’s time to take the ferry back home.
Fernandina Beach, FL
No summer destinations list would be complete without a Florida city on it, and our pick is Fernandina Beach. Shrimp enthusiasts in particular should keep this location in mind: Every year, the city celebrates the Isle of Eight Flags Shrimp Festival, where visitors can partake in some delicious seafood, as well as a parade. But, even if you’re not that passionate about these tiny crustaceans, that’s not a problem. Fernandina Beach is rife with beautiful beaches, museums, quaint shops and even a lighthouse.
Pacific Grove, CA
This must-visit coastal city looks as if it were pulled straight from TV — maybe because it was the setting of shows such as “Big Little Lies”. With a mix of historic homes, rocky coastlines and a monarch butterfly grove, Pacific Grove is the perfect location for a family vacation or a romantic couples’ getaway. Then, once you’re done soaking in the sun at Lovers Point Park, you can take a short walk down to Asilomar Beach to admire the sunset and the local marine life.
