Overview

Milepost 5 is an affordable housing community for creatives, developed for working artists of all disciplines. Located on a two-acre campus in Portland’s Montavilla neighborhood, our community of over 100 renters work in dozens of artistic fields.
Residents host monthly art openings, present plays, music, readings, workshops, and other events in the community spaces.
Income restrictions apply and are determined via the Portland Housing Bureau's guide for 60% of the area median income.
The complex boasts over 100 units consisting of both residential and artist studio spaces. The sizes of the spaces range from about 130 - 400 square feet.   While about half of the units feature their own bathroom en suite, the other half of the units have dorm-style bathrooms located throughout the building.

The units all have shared kitchens, which are located on both the second and third floors. Most residents keep a mini-fridge inside their apartments. The building has a laundry room with coin-operated machines, a workshop for working on small projects, galleries, and community gardens.
Public transportation is readily available by light rail or many bus lines.

Resident Community Areas

I would like a more cohesive community vision and communication - is this still an artist community going forward? It would be helpful to have a designated area for residents to comingle and relieve tensions - indoors and/or preferably outdoors. There is currently no areas outside in which people can comfortably hang out and discuss things together on the property - a picnic table or seating in the garden or courtyard would be appreciated. Indoors is less conducive to meeting during covid inside inclosed spaces - I heard that there have been issues with alcohol outside and I would like to suggest some ideas to stop behaviors where people are drinking outside in unacceptable areas or irresponsibly/regularly (outside of sanctioned events). I dont drink alcohol but I am not against alcohol use - however I think having a space where residents can comingle outweighs people using the outside areas for drinking - especially during covid.
