Living in Joliet, IL

As of 2010, Joliet was the fourth largest city in the state. This puts it in a great position, offering all the convenience and options of the big city, while avoiding the crowding and crime. Residents here love the many options for schools and children’s activities, which help make Joliet the perfect place to start or raise a family.

For some, the area still has a negative reputation as a “prison city.” It was once home to two major prisons and some of those bad connotations have remained. But in truth, the prisons have been closed for over 10 years and are now nothing more than historic places of interest.

Things to do in Joliet

The city has a long history of championship amateur and high school sports. There’s also a minor league baseball team here, the Joliet Slammers, that play at Silver Cross Field. Racing fans will also enjoy the NASCAR races at the Chicagoland Speedway. Of course, a short trip gives you access to all the pro games in Chicago, including the Cubs, White Sox, Bulls, Blackhawks, and Bears.

Downtown Joliet is a revitalized district, featuring boutique and specialty shops, along with cafes, restaurants, and open air dining. The Louis Joliet Mall is another great shopping destination. This enclosed, single level mall offers over 90 stores and restaurants in total.

For a day of family fun with the kids, you just have to visit the Joliet Splash Station. It has something for everyone – massive water slides, a lazy river, and a splash garden for toddlers. Another great family activity is the Haunted Trails Amusement Park. There you’ll find go karts, miniature golf, and laser tag. A fun but free activity is biking the Joliet Junction Trail, a very well-maintained and beautiful bicycle trail in the city.

 

Speaking of trails, Joliet is filled with them – and parks, too. The Illinois & Michigan Canal State Trail provides over 60 miles of biking pleasure. Nearby Pilcher Park Nature Center is a gigantic 640-acre outdoor recreation site. There you can hike, picnic, and even view Native American burial mounds. And for some quality time with your canine friends, Hammel Woods Park offers a 6-acre dog park.

If you want to spend some quality time with your significant other, consider an evening at the Hollywood Casino. In addition to table games and slots, you can enjoy a romantic dinner there at your choice of several fine restaurants. Or catch a show together at the historic Rialto Square Theatre. This gorgeous venue features regular concerts and movies, making it a great couple’s activity.

Joliet is the home of the popular Ballpark Ale Fest, which features not only craft beers and great food, but also an exhibition game each year. Another great annual tradition is the Blacklight Run in October. This is a fun, easy 5K race with glowing decorations for the runners and spectators. All ages are welcome!

The city has long been a transportation hub, and careers with Amtrak and other land and water shipping firms are plentiful. But there are several other major industries in the area, including healthcare, education, and gaming. If you’re in the medical field, the Presence St. Joseph Medical Center and Silver Cross Hospital employ thousands.

The local public school districts as well as St. Francis University provide many education jobs. Also, there are two large casinos here, for those interested in any aspect of the gaming industry: Hollywood Casino and Harrah’s.

Education in Joliet

There are three high schools in the city, including Joliet Catholic Academy. Public high schools are part of the Joliet Township High School District, while all other public schools are in the Joliet Public Schools District. For the younger ones, there are 15 elementary schools to choose from.

While nearby Chicago has prestigious institutions like DePaul and Loyola, there are some excellent higher education options available right here in Joliet. Both Joliet Junior College and the University of St. Francis call the city home.
